Right now I am using my 2nd Hydor Theo Submersible heater (50W) for my 10g. Our house is pretty chilly, so I recently purchased this heater. This is actually my 2nd heater, as the first one didn't seem to keep the right temp. My thermometers would say 77, when I had the heater set at 73.

I am experiencing the same situation with this 2nd heater. I see it keeps kicking on, when I have the temp set on the heater at 73; the thermometer is reading 77. I'm just trying to get the temp down a bit.

So my first question is:
Do submersible heaters always kick on and off regardless of what you're trying to get the temp at? (It doesn't seem right). To get the temp to go down is the only solution to unplug the heater?

Second question is:
What heaters do you recommend? I read titanium heaters are pretty good. Does anyone have any suggestions on a brand?

Appreciate your input!

Well since your home is quite cold the heater is just trying to keep up. most heaters are off by about 2-3 degrees.....

But I think if your going to look for the best heater out there its the Titanium, since it has a controller on the out side of the tank... biggrin.gif

I have the Stealth Visi Therm heaters by Marineland. It's not titanium but it keeps the tank temp VERY steady. Every time I look at the thermometer it's exactly where I set it (on all 3 tanks). And you know I look at my tanks ALL day long!!

It's submersible and can be mounted vertically or horizontally. The thermostat is on the top of the unit rather than outside the tank. For me, with 4 little hands in the house I kinda like it that way. Once the temp is where you want it (which took me one adjustment once it was in the tank) you don't have to worry about lil "helpers" adjusting the temp. (Which may be an issue for you if it's in Kenny's room. Not saying he's naughty, just saying he's 3! wink.gif )

hehehe...thanks, Lisa! Kenny can't even reach where the heater is. But you present a very good point. All I need is for one of them to climb up a chair when they are in one of their "exploratory" moments.....

And thanks, Koko and Tinkokeshi.

Those titanium heaters are pretty cheap. Heck, I spent $25 for my 50W at Petsmart. Darn...I'm gonna return that and get one of these......now which one....I'll have to think about this......

Yeah I've got a lot of things my kids "can't reach"--or so I thought. They are inventive little creatures at these ages. If it looks interesting, they'll figure out a way in a split second!! heartpump.gif

Whatever you get, if you get it at Petsmart just make sure you print off the petsmart.com price. They'll match it in the store. When I got mine (2 bigger ones for the 90 gal) the in-store price was like $37.99 and the on-line price was $19.99!! Even the cashier couldn't believe it! I do this with pretty much anything I buy there. Always check their on-line price first! wink.gif

Happy heating.
