hi, i have the 20 gallon tank set up on my mums unit at the moment, needless to say she aint happy about it. the only other place for it to go is on anoter unit upstairs, but the tank is 30 inches long and the unit is only 28 inches. is this unsafe and will it crack the tank if it hangs over??

Its not a good idea to allow a tank to overhang. The weight of the tank is being held on the black rim it stands in if this is what your tank has.
You could try and get a bit of plywood cut to size and this can hang just a little bit on each side.

Unless you have something for the base to sit on to take the weight then it might well crack.

ok, thanks. i wasnt sure if it would be ok just being the 2 inches over. I will have to have rethink, and perhaps buy another unit for the tank. thank you for you help.

Claire, I'd reccomend getting a new stand or building an aquarium safe stand yourself. Even if the glass doesn't break, you'll probably get leaks because the weight won't be evenly distributed. Just my

Would letting it hang one inch over on each side be ok till she gets a new stand? My 29 hangs over a little bit and it's fine (I check the bottom of that side every time I clean the gravel for cracks)

That could work though I wouldnt want to be held responsible if the tank broke.
Really all you need is a bit of inch thick wood cut to the size of the tank underneath.

I wouldnt hold anymore responsible, was just wondering!! ill have to have a look to see if i can drill into the uni to secure the wood. if not it will have to stay where it is for now til pay day!! dot really want to move them right now, they seem to be getting better.
