~ Hey ~ I was wondering if there is anything around your house that you can use a breeder as i am breeding for my fish store! The babies go up for donation and then people buy them for donations, so it is like giving a puppy a new home! And the donations go to the store in finding dogs and all other animals homes and buying needed supplies!

Thanks!

Arg...Dean, I don't think you quite understood the posts on yur other thread about breeding and giving to petstores. dry.gif

You don't even know if your petstore will do the donation thing. There are better ways to donate and help homeless animals. Petco and Petsmart are ALWAYS having all sorts of fundraisers for shelters...rounding up the the nearest dollar for donations, x-mass and other photo booths, Selling calenders, T-shirts, other merchendise, etc. Around xmas time, they usually set up the most booths for donations. You could donate money yourself (maybe the money you'd be using to breed those fish). You can help out at an animal shelter, donate straight to them (thats the best because they get to use 100% of donations) and learn what kinds of foods, toys, puppy/kitten replacement etc that they need. Some shelters are picky and prefer only high quality foods, so check before you donate please.

Please Please PLEASE re-read the thread about breeding your platies for the petstore...the petstores who do take in fish only take in emergencies usually. They already have an endless source of platies from the fishery and by continuously giving them your fish, they may not have room for all those unwanted fish that people flush or neglect all the time sad.gif

dean. i've said it before and i'll say it again. there are a lot of incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful people here on this board, all of whom would love to see your fish happy. so my quesion is this, why post a question here if you're going to ignore all the knowledgeable advice that is given?

increasing the number of unwanted fish is not the best way, no scratch that, it's not any way for you to help decrease the number of unwanted cats and dogs. breeding fish for your petstore is only going to give a couple cents to those cats and dogs, but is going to cause 10 times that much trouble for the fish you bring into this world.

wanting to help is very admirable, but my god, there's got to be a better way. how about going to the humane society of missouri. look, i've already done the work for ya, it's at 146 Chesterfield Mall, Chesterfield, MO; a mere 4 miles from balwin. go there and ask to volunteer, they'll find something for you to do like walk the dogs and play with the cats and generally improve the quality of life for some very desperate animals. the phone number is (636) 530-0805. tell ur mom you want to volunteer. it'll impress your parents, show them how grown up you are, as well as look good on ur college or job applications in the future.

Dean,

I think what Kissy and Justin have posted is something you need to re visit and listen too, All to often it seem's that you fire a thread at us and expect everyone to agree with what you are doing, But yet when someone give's their opnion you get defensive?! dry.gif It's getting a little old to be truthful with you.

Kissy pointed out some great thing's for raising money, And if you indeed don't know that the LPS will go along with your "Breeding"?? I think you really need to think before you speak exactly.gif And when posting be prepared for what other member's are going to post back to you please. Don't argue with people constantly..There are far more members on here that have more knowledge and exprience than you have. Listen to others before jumping the gun.

And I can see that Justin already did research for you! This is something you should be able to do yourself I think.

mmm i don't think it's too good of an idea either. kissy and justin are giving you good advice.

even if you WERE to breed your fish, just the fact that you don't have the equipment necessary to do it, should clue you in that you are not ready to take on the consequences of the action.

have you even considered what you will put the fry in? where they will go if the petstore CAN'T take all of them? or even if the quality of your fry aren't as good as the retail store's fish, who would want to buy them?

all of these things are things you have to think about BEFORE jumping in head first.

Dean, Youre going to do a lot more bad than good here I think. You won't raise much, if any money. Your platies will sit in the store and overpopulate there. The pet stores usually have enough platies.

Its good that you want to help, but why dont you do as Justin said and volunteer? Thats a much better way to get involved. exactly.gif

Thanks guys.

Please reconsider. If you really want to donate to the shelters, there are better ways that we have mentioned that are free and don't involve jeopardizing lives of other creatures. Potentially harming one creature to try and help another (by only a few cents) is very counterproductive.

You do not even know the situations and conditions that your LFS will take them in, or even if they do donate the FEW cents to charity. Magick was only reffering to one store that is actually across the country.

If you really REALLY want to breed your fish, I recomend you wait. Wait until you are much more knowlagable and experienced, have a steady income of money, Have the facilities to separate the sexes of parents and your other fish comfortably (NOT overstocked like you are now) and at least another 10 gallon tank to house and grow your babies, have all the equipment you need for your own fish as well as babies (TEST KIT, specific fry food, etc) and knowlegable responsible homes for those babies (reserved before you breed) that will separate sexes and take good care of them.

If you attempt breeding without those things, I am sorry but we have given you PLENTY of advice trying not to hound youl You'd be very foolish to do that. Breeding is only for experienced and knowlegable fish owners. You can not even take proper care of the fish you have now, so why on earth would you want to make even more lives under those conditions?

I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, but I've been very patient for months.

i understand it was just that i was having a bad day when i posted that! Sorry!

I might volunteer depending on if i can get a ride!

Thanks! Hey Justin do you live around Chesterfield?

How do you know the number!
x-Lucy-Fish-x
do you have a bicycle? 4 miles is not to far to cycle?
balashark
it's cool. we all have bad days. we just all want to see you suceed with fishkeeping, and then later on down the line when you've got the equipment and the room and the knowledge, breeding.

na man, i live in maryland; but i've always been in close contact with the humane society (i called a lady i know at our HSUS here in washington county, and they got me the address and number of the one closest to you.

i'd bet if you told ur mom you really want to do your part to help animals, she'd be really proud of you. maybe she'd even know of a family member that could give you a ride or something, even if it's just one day a week, the people at the humane society would appreciate it; and of course so would the animals.

the lady also told me there's a wildlife rescue right in balwin. i don't know if they're looking for volunteers, and she didn't have the number handy, but if you can't get out to chesterfield you could even try there.

or there's tons of stuff you could do. i walked dogs after school for people in my apt complex. i was really young and didn't have anything i needed the money for, so i did it for love of dogs and i donated what money people did give me to the humane society. so you could even charge a couple bucks a week. save some of the money to buy the fish stuff you need, and even donate a little bit of it to the humane society too.

just tryin to think of ways you can help other animals AND help your fish! talk to your mom tho, i bet she'll help ya think of a way to get to chesterfield.

020292
yeah! I know exactly where the wildlife thing is becuase it is about a block away from my house! The chesterfield mall is about 15 minutes, so it is about 15 miles so i can not cycle and the roads! WOW! DRIVERS ARE CRAZY! I might go to the wildlife thi ng and see becuase i have nothing else to do on Saturdays and Friday nights so maybe i will!

Thanks for all the ideas! I will have to keep these in mind!
