In that case I'd rather go with the kind of filter you are having, Gia. With pond filters, it says it on the package what kind of pump they need.
As an example, the smaller fishmate filters I use need a pump that doesn't pump more than 500 gl/h, otherwise water comes out in every spot. Now, my filters sit about 2 ft above the pond, and I happen to like the Surge pumps (I don't think they are made anymore). On the package of the pumps there was a diagram on what size of pump pums how many gallons at what height, and all you had to do is pick the right sized pump accordingly.
Remember that only height is important when buying a pump, not how far away the filter is horizontally. Theoretically you could feed a filter that is 20 feet away, as long as its at the same height than the pond. Once the pump has to pump upwards, its a whole different story. I think its called "head".
Edit: Forgot to mention that most gallon ratings on those filters are meant for water gardens, not pond filled with ammonia producing fish. On my fishmates it said "good for up to 1000 gl ponds". If there are fish in it, it cuts the gallons in half right there, and a filter made for a 1000 gl water garden is only good for a 500 gl fish pond.
