I have recently become a Gold fish owner. My son bought me a Orana and a Golden Snail for Christmas. Today I bought home the most beautiful Veil tail Black Moor and it has been in the tank for 4 hours. I went out and came home 2 hours later and discivered to my HORROR that the Golden snail was chomping down on what was left iof the Black Moors left fin. It has also cause d a wound in his side. It is 10:30 pm here in Auckland New Zealand and I am mortified that I have to wait till the morning to get help for this beautiful creature in my care. Does anyone know anything I can do to help it ?

Oh My Goodness!! I never knew snails would do that! I know you must be beside yourself!!

The pros will come along soon and give you some good advice GUARANTEED! But I just wanted to tell you i feel for you!! Gosh i would take that THiNG back to the store ASAP! (And that's only if I could control myself and not throw him as far as I could out the door! ) but then THAT's why I said WAIT FOR THE PROS!!) blink.gif

If you have melafix, add the recommended amount every day for a few days and he should heal nicely and quickly in my experience. I've never heard of a snail doing that before either. sad.gif Good luck with him and welcome to Koko's! smile.gif

OMG! Well, separate them immediatly, obviosly. Keep your water pristine. Make sure it remains very clean until the fin heals. There is not much you can do but keep the water perfect and wait for it to heal.

Goldfish are VERY good at healing after trama as long as they are healthy to begin with and they have good water to make sure they do not get an infection.

Trust me, I had 3 cat attacks on my fish. One was nearly gutted, and the other had her gills, stomach, and side ripped into and they both healed WONDERFULLY!

Just keep an eye on your fishy. Perfect water! Cant say it anymore! lol

oh yeah and about snails.... I used to put two apple snails with my goldfishes... once a while you know goldfish being goldfish they just love to nip at something onc a while so they nip at my snails.... I think the snails is annoyed and oozes out a kind of juice... i thought it's nothing but the next day I found out that there are white layers covering their eyes and bodies. and my moor fish is like drunk... i quickly take out the snails and wash the whole aquarium and put them back they recover instantly but my moor fish died sad.gif

I agree, Gia....that sounds like a ph crash.

Wow thats odd. I have 5 snails with my goldies and I have never had any problems. Sometimes a fish will knock the snail off the wall but doesnt harm them. headscratch.gif

Some of the larger apple snails from the canaliculata group ARE carnivorous. ohmy.gif Check out Donya's research page at applesnail.net (I think it's applesnail.info - but not certain) She describes the Pomacea Insularum trying to eat her hand while she cleaned the tank. Eeeew! Maybe you can use the info there to identify which type yours is?
