I have three female Guppies. All three are pregnant. My red tailed girl is very large and has that huge dark spot that is supposed to show how far along she is. My blue tailed girl is about half that big. My pale bodied, orange tailed girl has the pink spot where the babies are.

How can I tell when the babies are due? Is there any way? Like a fishie ultrasound? lol

You can only get a rough idea if you see them mate as it takes around a month for them to drop young.
A barrel shape is often a good pointer to them being very near to giving birth as well.
It also depends on how many young they are carrying as well as some get really huge with lots of young and some dont seem that big and can drop half a dozen the next day.
Its down to guess work really i suppose.

you can also tell when there is one coming out of the end!

LOL !

For real you really can not tell unless you look closey and most likely they will do it at night becuase they need their privacy!

Thanks!

I noticed when mine gave birth, they would be sort of hovering around in the same spot for quite awhile. I think that was my biggest clue and I noticed it happen a 2nd time as well... One of my females was in the exact same area near the top of the tank for close to an hour before I went to see what was up LoL.

If you keep a close eye on them and watch constantly whenever you have the free time, you'll be able to tell when she's getting ready or close to it. Just takes some practice!

Heh, and as Dean said, you can also tell if there's a fry trying to escape wink.gif

Good luck! I've caught 3 of my guppies during birth and it was neat to watch. The last 2 I missed though -_-

My mom said that Guppies will usually eat their own young, so the population wouldn't be so high. I also have Kasem in there with them.

Yep, they will eat the young if they have the chance. I've had 2 full batches eaten. It does keep the population down though! I've had my guppies for quite awhile and haven't had any overcrowding problems yet. LoL

GOod luck with the fish smile.gif

I think one is due soon. She's getting purdy big. I'd love to have guppy fry!!! As long as they aren't all eaten.

As long as you have lots of cover in the tank, some should make it! One of my batches was born in a bare-bottom tank (I didn't even know the fish was pregnant! She wasn't very large LoL), but the fry managed to hide among the small pile of gravel in a corner where a live plant is. I caught 7 of them in a dixie cup and moved them to a breeder. 4 of them survived smile.gif

yea, that's where i'm at right now. although i hate the thought of them getting eatten. i just don't have the space for them. i've got 23 fry right now growing in a 10 gal, then after they are big enough i'm gonna separate my boys and girls. i saw two fry yesterday in my 29 gal and didn't try to save them. they'll just have to hide well or get eatten sad.gif and all my girls look like they are about to bust, they're huge blink.gif when i saw my last guppy give birth i saw her open up then at the end of the day i saw her close back up and she stopped having them. i saw two come out of her, it was cool. she was swimming around with a tail fin and babies butt sticking out her butt laugh.gif

I wanted to keep the fry and didn't want them to get eaten, althought I'm sure some did. After my current batch of fry, I will not save them anymore unless a friend wants a few LoL.
