Hi guys, quick question! smile.gif

I got liquid calcium and iodine supplements for my snails. Can I add these to the tanks that have both goldfish and snails living together? I did not know if it would hurt my fish!

I'm not going to use them yet! I need to make sure its not harmful to anyone.

Thanks! exactly.gif

The liquid calcium won't hurt the fish. Just make sure you follow the directions on the bottle.

As to iodine, I've never used it.. I doubt it would harm the goldies, but I can't give you a definitive answer on that. *sits around waiting for someone else to come along and help*

I dont bother with iodine myself, but I use calcium and pH rasing things with the goldies all the time, and they do fine smile.gif

hmm, interesting. i've heard of using a small bit of iodine on open sores of koi or goldfish. i've also heard of only using aquarium salt w/ fish because table salt contains iodine and other toxins. I ALSO remember an article i read in school about a study NIH did on the affects of iodine on the thyroid and pituitary gland of goldfish. i don't remember exactly what the article said, but i don't think it was a good thing.

the only thing i haven't heard is what iodine does to help the snails. does it say on your bottle what it's supposed to be for? i'm just curious.

i know from a good friend of mine who's a chef in dc, that escargot is supposedly high in vitamins and nutrients, including iodine!

hope that helps.

I have heard of it being used on snails, and I think that it helps their shells be stronger/grow faster, or just improve in general. It's possible to keep and breed perfectly healthy snails without the use of iodine though.

its not the iodine in table salt thats bad, its the anti-caking agents

yea, now that i think about where i heard that about the salt, it was from a pet store, so, i guess take it for what it's worth smile.gif
