We will be getting a new tank in a few days. My husband has caught the bug! Anyway, what we were wondering about is adding water from my tank to his to help with the cycling. My tank has not finished its cycle, I am still in the ammonia phase. And another thing is, we are currently salting the tank to cure a case of ich.
What do ya'll think? Would it be O.K. to add the water from my tank? Or should we get some from the lfs?
We are so lost!
Thanks for the help,
Kim

If your tank hasn't finished cycling, and your fish have ich... DO NOT add any water from your tank into another tank.
The beneficial bacteria don't live in the water. they live on the solid surfaces in your tank and on the media in your filter.
Adding the water from your tank will infect the new tank with ich... Why infect the new tank, start with new clean water.
What's so wrong with your tap water that you think you need to get water from a pet store?

I didn't think that we should put the water from my tank in there either, but I just wanted to make sure.
I read somewhere that water from an established tank would help with the cycle of a new one. That's why I asked.
Thanks for the info

Kimma, biological media (filter pads, filter floss, bio-balls, etc) or even gravel from a well established aquarium can truly speed up cycling a new tank. Some people might suggest using the water from an established tank, but IMO all that will do is seed the new tank with any nasties living in the established tank. The beneficial bacteria do not live free swimming in the water.
I've setup a Fluval 304 filter for a quarantine tank using some filter floss from my main tank and had an instant cycle. The quarantine tank never did test positive for ammonia or nitrites.
