I won a Juwel Rekord 70 tank for £35 ?! BARGAIN??!! This has been used but only for 5 weeks and I got the stand, stones etc with it. The only things I need to buy are the filters and pump and I know where I can get them from for £20 + carriage. I was told by the seller what filters and pump to use but I thought I would check on here first to see if they are the best for my tank. I was told that I needed the following:

1x nitrate sponge + 1x carbon sponge + 1x filter wool plus a Juwel powerhead pump 400. He later said that a juwel powerhead 280 would also be ok for my size of tank, surely there must be a difference in these. I have received the tank and it looks brilliant. I am using it for a blackmoor and four minnows.

Does anyone own one of these tanks and are they good?

thanks
sandy
I have this tank as well.
You say it needs a pump. I dont understand why it came without one as it its supposed to stay with the tank.
Is the black casing still there?
I suggest you get the 400 lph pump and the blue filter sponges. You dont need the green nitrate one but I would get a black one in case you need it to take meds out and a pack of the white floss which you should change at each water change.
The problem with the pump is that it doesnt circulate the water very well.
I would suggest removing the black housing altogether and getting a better filter but the juwel is the best for biological filtration and maybe get a really small filter to run beside it to keep the water circulated.
You could always ditch the black housing by using a sharp blade to remove it and get yourself another filter system.
Hope that helps smile.gif

Hi there - thanks for the reply. He did have the pump but sold it and the filters separatley on ebay (not sure why).

Could you please list each sponge separately and its name - I am very new to this.

What other pump would you suggest.

It does still have the black casing.

sandy
For an external then this is a great buy and you could use it without the black box in the tank.

If you want to keep your juwel then this would be great at keeping the water circulated

In fact you could get the external and add this to also keep the water flowing. This little filter is brilliant and I have 3 of different sizes in my tanks. The best thing about them is that if the flow is too much then you can add the spray bar which is attached or you can add the venturi which adds bubbles to the water. The seller of this item is who I buy mine from and hes really good. The only downside is that it doesnt have a lot of biological media so is really only useful at moving the water around.

for the filter pads then
here are the white ones that you place on the top and change each week

This is the carbon. I suggest you buy a pack of these and only use one when necessary.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/JUWEL-CARBON-COMPACT...1QQcmdZViewItem

This is the nitrate sponge, but you dont need these as water changes are the best way for dealing with high levels, unless they are highf rom the tap?
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/JUWEL-NITRATE-SPONGE...1QQcmdZViewItem

This is the blue biological pad, you should be able to get two in the basket topped with the white filter wool
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Juwel-Aquarium-Coars...1QQcmdZViewItem

These are only to let you see what they look like, its up to you what you go with and how you want your tank to look.
The blue sponges should only be squeezed out around once a month to get rid of the gunk and shouldnt be replaced. Also remember to syphon out the black housing every couple of months as well as you can get a lot of gunk in there as well.
Does the filter housing contain the white basket to put these sponges into?
Bubblefish
This is great, thanks

All I have attached is the black box I don't have a white basket, could you show me what that looks like. I bet I have loads missing in the tank that I didn't know about. How do I syphon out the black box because I don't think I can take this out of the tank.

It does have an air curtain (blue looking tubing) under the stones .

Which filter goes at the bottom of the black box and which one's follow?

Please be patient with me, I am very new to this i'm afraid.

thanks once again

I was told that I needed a juwel pump 400 or a juwel powerhead 280, would it also be better to buy the magi flow as well?

and I was also told that I needed the following filters

1x nitrate sponge + 1x carbon sponge + 1x filter wool.

You mentioned white filter wool, is that the first sponge in your last reply?
sandy
Here is a list of bits for the filter, this is for demonstration purposes only smile.gif

I would still get the 400 if you are going to keep the juwel filter.

In there you will see the filter basket. This fits into the main compartment of the black case. Into this you will just need two blue sponges and on top of that a white piece of poly pad which collects all the big pieces of dirt. This is the only bit that needs changing when it gets dirty, the other blue sponges just once in a while. You will also see the pump and bits you need as well which is the 400 ltr pump. This fits into the smaller part of the chamber and the nozzles will point out of the hole.
The way it works is that water is drawn from the bottom and the top over the white wool and then down through the two sponges. The pump then takes it up and out again.
To clean the inside all you do is lift the white basket with the sponges in out and using a hose * i use the end of my gravel vac* put this down into where the pump sits *you might have to take the pump out* and thats where you really need to suction from and then you can do the main compartment quickly. You should only need to do this every 3 months i think.
Remember when you order its the compact size you need.
So to summarise 2 x blue sponges and a pack of white poly wool or whatever they call it. And also a pack of the black carbon to be used whenever needed.
The white wool is the first mentioned, its not very thick maybe 1/4 inch but is just used to take out the large bits of debris.

Now, the magi will help circulate the tank for you and stop any parts of the tank getting stagnant. As ive said it comes with the spray bar so the current wont be too bad. If you go back through the ebay listings then theres an even smaller one if you prefer.

Remember though that you will need to cycle it all before adding the fish. I used *cycle* to help mature it. Also using some or all the gravel from your old tank will help speed it up.
What type of filter do you have on the other tank?

Hi sandy - thanks for the help again, I don't actually have a pump either, basically I have the tank, stand, gravel and the black box is attahed to the tank already. I also have a white piece of plactic that must be the white cage for the box, although it doesn't look like a cage.

I need the pump and the filter sponges to get the tank up and running, there is also an air curtain attachched which is positioned under the gravel which supplies a line of bubbles to the back of the tank. A seller on ebay is telling me that I need the starter pack for the Rekord 70 which includes

"power head that sits inside the black filter box under that comes the polypad x1 then the carbon sponge x1 then niterate x1 then the fine sponge x1 and finally the coarse sponge x1 which are all held together in a plastic cage that slots inside the black box "

Is the powerhead which he is talking about the pump ?
sandy
Yes, the powerhead is the pump and make sure you get the 400lph one. The white thing has two sides and a base and what look like handles at the top. My own only holds two sponges and both of those are blue, one being a fine and the other coarse.
Its up to you which sponges you get but as long as you have a blue then it doesnt matter but you dont need to add a black.

The airstone at the back will need an air pump to run it.

Dear Sandy

I went for a 600 pump (they told me that they have been used on the Juwel Rekord 70's) and it would be much better for the fish. I also got 10 boxes of sponges and the correct filter cage (it should have had two cages)

thanks for your help again
sandy
You sure its a rekord 70? Mine only has room for one white basket.
Glad you have it sorted now smile.gif
Bubblefish
Dear Sandy.

Yes it is but I think the basket is two smaller ones measuring the same as the taller one, oh well I have two types now.

Do you think I have done the right thing in getting the 600 pump?

thanks for all you help.

sandy
I think so as the 600 will hopefully be strong enough to circulate the water better. The only drawback I see is that it might draw the water faster over the sponge but it should be alright.
