I can't believe they hatched! I thought with me and daddy being new at this one or both of us would mess up along the way. And yes, I know there is plenty of time for us to mess up still.

In the middle of the night I woke up and I noticed Siam was going crazy. He was swimming laps around tank. I thought well maybe he's just out for an early morning jog. I decided to get up and check on him. At first I didn't see anything abnormal and from what I could tell nothing was in the bubble nest(s). I know newborn fry can be really hard to see so I grabbed a flashlight and shined it on the nest and behold I see little tiny slivers hangging from it! At first I thought I was a bit delusional so I just went back to bed and waited to see what morning would bring.

And what did it bring?

FRY! Their much easier to see now. I'm not sure how many there are yet. Every once in awhile one will fall out of the nest and dart back up to the nest by itself. Siam is sitting under the nest watching the fry sink down and dart back up. I did see one fry sink right past his eye, he watched it with interest and then swam over and gulped it up. I watched with baited breath to see what he'd do with it. Like the super dad he's been he swam back up to the nest and put it back. As he was returning the rouge fry he hit the nest with his dorsal and caused around 6 fry to rain down from it. Siam got this panicked look and started to swim back and forth catching and spitting. After he got them all he cruised the bottom of the tank looking for any stragglers. Oh, if he only new what he's in for the next couple days, poor guy.

I couldn't ask for a better dad for my first spawn.

I'll udate to this post so keep checking back. biggrin.gif

Great news! Veiltails are such good breeders.

Fingers crossed that the water quality maintains itself for the next week until they're old enough for their first waterchange. That's the biggest danger.

Well so far so good. All the eggs seemed to have hatched and there is anywhere between 35-50 fry krazy.gif . Dad is holding in there, doing the NY to LA thing as Faith from Betta Talk would say. Some of the fry are already trying to wander off on their own. They'll get this little burst of energy and take off and then.... zoom down to the bottom they go. Siam has been a bit ambitious with his catching and spitting. There is only so much a little fry can take and some of them are starting to look a bit....well....dead. Some of the fry seem to have no trouble staying in the nest. As soon as they start to sink they are able to put themselves back. Others just keep sinking over and over (being dead may have something to do with it). I figure these are the weak ones and probably wouldn't have made it anyways.

Well that it for today biggrin.gif .

Well almost all the fry are free swiming so I went ahead and removed dad. The fry got their first feeding this morning as well, some infusoria with a little hint of boiled egg yoke yuma.gif . Dad is doing ok. He wouldn't eat his breakfast and is pacing his tank, poor guy.

With all the fry out of the nest there looks to be around 50-70 fry Thud.gif , a little more then I was hoping for. Thank good I pulled Narcissa early, who knows how many eggs she still had in her. I know not all the fry will survive. I think I'm going to have to go buy another grow out tank just incase.

biggrin.gif So far so good... Is everyone free swimming now? You may want to take Siam out of the tank now if they are. Continued luck with the fry. biggrin.gif
