I have a stunted pair of mini dayaks that I inherited, who, once I started feeding them properly actually started making all the right moves. And since it is hot and stormy here... something that rarely happens, I put them together.
I've done everything wrong so far, started with the tank too small, added water, lifted the nest higher, turned on the sponge filter early... because water quality is harder to maintain in a little tank... but apart from a few eggs that dad can't be bothered picking up off the bottom, he's doing a good job.
In this heat they should hatch fairly quickly... if they hatch at all. When you're dealing with stunted fish, infertility is a strong possibility.

Whooo. I hope they hatch. I've considered breeding my Bettas but, not enough space for multiple boys.
Good luck with them!!

Oooooh, echo....
He's moved all the eggs to the other side of the nest and is giving me huffy looks. I feel like a meddler.
I'll only keep a couple the rest I'll sell online or to the local petshop at around 3 months old. I am running out of room tho.

Well I was looking for tails and looking for tails and thinking things were going badly when... I noticed little eyeballs staring back at me.
There's a few in there at least.
Also another pair got busy and made a nest full of eggs. Waiting to see what happened there too.
The two sets of fry will only be a couple of days apart if the second lot of eggs hatch.

Pa (he's actually grey-blue, not aqua, with a red fringe and white bits - flash does weird things with their reflective layers):

Oooooh, looking in to see what the little royal blue ct male was doing with his batch of eggs and I saw one set of eyeballs on not much staring back at me. At least one fry from the marble/royal blue spawn!

It's Harley. He's curled up in a ball, sleeping in my mom's chair. He looked cute so I got a picture of him!
Gah! I was going to show you the original picture, but it's saved on a CD somewhere.

Oh.... it's like a foxie dog? I was trying to see a black moor or something and the brain wouldn't let me see a dog!

My Harley looks cute asleep too... but he's a boy. The naughtier they are in the day time, the cuter they look asleep... it's some evolutionary survival mechanism to stop parents killing their own offspring like some of the wiser mammals do.
I'd send one to Georgia, Maceo, but do you
know how slow Australia Post is? Your govt. would think it was chemical warfare by the time it arrived. Pheweeee!
The parents of these fish came in from Indonesia (Dayak is a tribe from Borneo), I'm sure there's an Indonesian breeder just dying to send you a dayak for the right price.

Yup. He's supposed to be a Fox Terrier. And... I'm probably confusing myself but, my Harley is a boy, too.

I've counted about a dozen in the dayak spawn and four in the royal marble spawn... but I can't see that one very well. The nest is still in the way and the tank is in a dark corner... and well... they're incredibly tiny.
Just trying to wind up the old brain to get the bbs cultures started.

Well there's about ten fry in each tank. I cranked up the bbs hatchery and that delivers one meal a day for about three days and then they have just a day of microworms while I break it down and start it up again.
I can't be bothered mucking about with two brine shrimp hatcheries. I'm so glad they only need bbs for about 6 weeks.
I'm going to merge the two spawns into one tank since they're both small. It will be interesting trying to pick the blue marbles from the dayaks later tho!

Aw... 2 months old...

As you can see, my experiment to see if stunted betta produce full-size offspring, isn't fully conclusive. These guys are a bit small.

And the fingers are pointing to double tails! Have you ever heard of double tail dayaks?
And look at the length of the top and bottom fins! Must be some double tail genes in there somewhere... altho not with the parents.

And I mentioned the Blue/Marble spawn too... well mostly they're a lot bigger despite being a day younger:
Pa:

Ma (scuse the blurr):

Bubs:

In fact I separated this nine into their own 2ft tank to give their little siblings a chance to grow without their food hogging.
There's about 20 blue/marbles and 15 dayaks... but I haven't counted properly yet... they're too sneaky.
