You will need a saltwater tank to keep them.

Hermit crabs are social creatures and need to live in groups. Do you have the funds, space and ability to properly care for them?

I would say no Dean.Hermit Crabs are really alot more difficult to deal with than what people realize. They are all wild caught and die rather easily too. They have alot of special requirements, which can be real time consuming. They need a certain % of Humidity/Fresh Food along with their reg.food/They need both fresh water and Saltwater bowls in their tank-The list goes on.......Not a good choice for the beginner's at all. Sorry.

Yes,they can be expensive, especially when you buy everything else that they need to be stay/healthy. They normally don't live very long in Critter Keepers, they actually need a glass tank with a tight lid on it to keep humidity in.They like being warm,so alot of times you have to buy reptile heater's.They constantly grow, and you have to have ALot of different size/type of shells for them to check out for they can be rather picky. Lots of extra care and money...

Hey Devs, they are really all wild caught? I didn't know that. I feel so bad for the kids I babysit for's hermit crab (yes..the same kids who had the goldfish and bettas

) They keep/kept it in a little plastic container (about 1/4 gallon) with playground sand and a stupid plastic lego palm tree. Poor little guy...I'm not sure if he's still around now, but every time I went over, I was so tempted to just steal him. I honestly would, but I don't have the right habitat to house him in either

Unfortunately Kissy last I knew, they haven't figured out how to breed them in Captivity, and they are still all wild caught. That is mostly why you see them either dead in the Pet Stores,or they die almost as soon as you get them home.Stress is the top major factor for those guys-then the fact that people really don't know what's really involved with caring for them.

Hermit crabs seem to be very sociable ,and that poor little guy must truly be miserable between that and his care.

Dean,Good choice there.I am proud of you for realizing that fact.

You can always look into them in the future when you have easier access to their requirements.

I would say no. I can tell you details about all the money Ive spent on mine in the 2 years that Ive had them. I now have a 60 gallon aquarium in my kitchen with 17 hermit crabs, most of them rescues.
I definitely would advise against supporting the cute little mall kiosks where they have the crabs wit the fun little painted shells. We are really hoping most of them will just go out of business (as a lot have already) as I am against fads regarding pets.
I have kept hermits since the late 80s and they, like goldfish, have always been regarded as throwaway pets (my favorite shirt says, There are no Throwaway animals! on the front). And like Devs said they are all wild caught which means that each little hermit you see at the mall, it was taken out of its natural habitat. That is why they are so difficult to care for.
They are great animals though, and for me well worth my investments of time and money.
