Yesterday afternoon, I went to look at a 75g tank that was for sale in our local paper. I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy it. It's complete with the stand and everything needed to set it up. It has two Penguin filters with it. I've heard of Penguin filters, but I've never used one (I have AquaClears on my gf tank). Are the Penguins good filters? What would I need to get to put in it? Do they use sponges or what?

Advice please???

yep penguins are good.... they're the marineland bio-wheel filters. i've never used one of the larger bio-wheel filters, but i think most people here add media to it... like behind the bio-wheel in the "empty" area... smile.gif

wow so yer getting a 75 gal eh? hehe how exciting!!! biggrin.gif

smile.gif The majority of my Filter's are still Aquaclears, but two of my 30 gal. tanks have recently been changed to penguin 350's. They have Cartridges that you buy for them, but what's also nice is the fact that they also have Media Baskets that you can choose to put it whatever you want. yeah.gif I think that they're good filters.

I'm glad they're good ones! I looked on the marineland website and I believe they are the 350s.

Yes, I'm pretty excited! Hopefully I'll be going tomorrow to pick it up. The only thing I don't like about it is that it has an oak stand. I really wanted a darker wood since all the furniture in my living room is darker. There's a company that make a product called polyshades...it's basically a colored polyurethane that you paint on furniture to change the color. I'm going to see if I can find it in sort of a mahogany color. If not, I'll just have the oak wood.

The Penguin 350, in my book, is the best HOB filter made, for the GPH. They are reliable, solid workhorses. Mine are quiet and have never given me any problems. There are many ways you can use them with media, they are easy to clean, and the cartridges are even easy to modify if desired.

You cannot go wrong with a Penquin if you want a HOB that pumps about 250gph.
