Full Version: Accidentally Poured In Chlorinated Water

I know it will probably be moot by the time this gets answered, and I am pretty sure everything is ok anyway, but just wanted to check.

Tonight while I was doing a water change I accidentally poured a bucket full of untreated tap water into the tank. I realized it immediately and poured some Prime directly into the tank (where usually I would mix it in the bucket first). I am assuming this is ok, since I know that people who use the Python hoses to fill theor tanks from the tap have to do it this way. And it was only 3 gallons into a 20 gallon.

But for future reference, had I NOT noticed this right away would it have caused any problems? How long does Prime stay "active" to remove the chlorine? Like for example, if I was doing a 50% water change and had just added in one bucketful of water that HAD been treated, then dumped in a second untreated bucket a few minutes later, would the Prime from the first bucket still be working? Since my tank is so small and Prime so concentrated, I am always using a little extra.

Just curious, I am 99.9% sure that my fish are fine from what I did. I don;t know where my brain was...I also almost had a messy siphon accident. The end in the bucket flipped out and started spraying all over, fortunately I had a towel down and caught it right away.

Thanks!

I'm sure it will be ok smile.gif Most of the time we add the fresh water straight into the tank and then add our water conditioner after. We've been doing that for years. Then again, we have great water in Melbourne!

Thanks for the reassurance! :-)

I've done that several times because I have to walk down a long hallway to get my water and by the time I get back I'm so distracted by the going ons on my floor that I just dump the bucket in without thinking...then usually as I'm doing it I remember and scramble for the dechlorinator.

I like your Ryan pic...is that a new one? :-) I am glad I'm not the only one who gets distracted...but I only have to walk like 6 feet, so I have no excuse!
