Tonight I noticed a bit of a problem with my new girl. Her gill flaps are very bright red (she is blue). She spit out her food.. she keeps going down to get it, but as soon as she does, she spits it out again.

Hubby noticed that she wedged herself underneath the big plastic base on the silk plant this morning, but she moved away as soon as she saw him.

What should I do?

My blue female betta Bellatrix has red gill flaps. Was your girl's red when you got her?

What are you feeding her again? Maybe she's just being picky. I know sometimes my guys will eat a certin food for a few days and then not eat it. They can go a few days without eating so I wouldn't panic right away.

There are smaller pellets for bettas called betta bits. They are a little smaller then the bio-gold. The only thing I don't like about them is they only float for a second and then sink. Once they sink my guys won't eat them but if yours likes eating from the bottom or catching food while it sinks she may like them better.

Well,

I am not sure there is cause for alarm. I have had Bettas with brighter red gills and many are very shy and if they are used to a certain food and then switch...they can taste and spit. They have to get used to it. Bettas do like having hidie spots. I would make sure there is plenty of foilage for her to hide behind, keep her water good, give her a pellet at a time and see what happens. heartpump.gif

There was no red when I got her, but the stress stripes could have hidden it.

She ate the bio-gold the previous night, but last night she kept spitting it out. She has three plants to hide in and I am currently soaking a little clay pot for her, she'll have that in a couple of days.

Well,

I wish you the best. All my Bettas were very unique in their ways...odd little creatures..so sometimes it is had to tell if something is TRULY worng.

I had one that truly, we thought had died 3 times and within an hour, came back to life...lived a few more months, did it again and so on.

Keep her water as perfect as possible and watch for more signs heartpump.gif

Sounds normal to me.

When they're more content all their colours get darker including gill flaps. Does she have red-tipped ventrals as well? Because it is common for red-tipped ventral fish to have red gill flaps.

Ventrals? You mean the little tiny fins near her belly? Yeah, those are red tipped.
