Well, we were in a certain store that starts with a W.... and I wandered over to the pet department.... they didn't have many bettas at all, I said hello to all the goldies and was getting ready to walk away when I saw her. Even hubby said she was gorgeous. I was just looking at her and he goes "Well, you have to pick out a tank" He didn't even try to talk me out of getting her!

She is still unnamed - she is quite a character - she swam around in her cup from the moment I picked her up, even in the car ride home. She started investigating as soon as she got into her tank. She's a little less than 2 inches from nose to tail. She is light blue/silver with two dark blue strips down her body. Her fins are pale with dark blue speckles. heartpump.gif

She's so pretty! I really like her, congrats on getting your girl smile.gif
Tinkokeshi
congratulations on your new fish! biggrin.gif
littleone78
Thanks! She is really taking it all in, she's been swimming nonstop since 11 AM!!

Well, I tried feeding her the same betta bites I feed my boys - they are too big! She can't get them in her mouth. So, I pulled it out and shaved some bits off the edges, she was able to eat it. Does anyone make pellets smaller than Hikari??
Tinkokeshi
hmm i feed my bettas Hikari betta bio gold. i don't know if they're the same thing as betta bites... but they're quite small.
Ponderosa Power
the bio-gold is pretty small...I couldn't imagine a smaller pellet! You could always soak it in water and then squish it into portions. It sounds like she's doing great! My betta mostly hid for the 1st week because he was scared of all the space in a 3 gallon lol.
littleone78
Yep, the Hikari bio gold is too big!! She tried to hard to get it in her little mouth. I ended up taking it out and mushing it in half - so she got half a pellet since the rest of it got stuck on the knife I was using.

I do have a sample of tropical fish flakes - maybe I can crumble those and give her maybe, half a flake or so?

awwwwwww heartpump.gif she's beautiful!! i love female bettas they are such characters! i feed mine hikari betta bio gold too and they have no problems eating them, of course all but one of my girls are some porkers. tiny is really small though, she has grown some since i got her. she's not much bigger than my guppies and she eats those too. they do have flakes for bettas, i have some tetra betta bin.

the stripes on her are signs of stress so once she gets comfy they'll probably go away. mine only stripe up now when i do water changes or take pics.
Ponderosa Power
So horizontal stipes mean stress and vertical mean happy? I can never remember.
littleone78
Aww, the stripes are pretty though. Could she still be stressed after 8 hours of being in her new home?
Ponderosa Power
Tropical flakes should be fine. Check the protein % though, we don't want her deprived of protein! Maybe you could crumple some freeze dried bloodworms to supplement or something similar.

here's something i found on the stripes

when i got my first female, juliet, i think she had stayed striped for a couple of days.

what about Barney or Puggy for the name?

Just some ideas! Wish my mom was like your hubby becuase she hates when i ask for stuff for a new fish!
littleone78
Thanks for the link Kristy! She still has the stripes this morning. She showed no interest in the flake food. She just sat there and stared at it. Then looked at me like "yeah, and?" Maybe she'll eat some during the day....

Every name I come up with, hubby doesn't like!! Some of my friends said Sapphire, I think it fits, but he says no... *bangs head on desk*

laugh.gif sapphire would be a nice name. once she gets hungry enough, she'll probably eat it. mine all eat the flakes. when i brought juliet home, i think it was five days before she finally ate something.

What a gorgeous girl. I love the girls they're so fiesty, but they're jumpers! I've had 2 bettas that refused to eat right away and the first one went 5 days, breaking his hunger strike on hikari pellets and the second one went 3 days and broke on freeze-dried bloodworms(wouldn't touch the frozen ones from the previous day though). Freeze dried bloodworms are a nice starter food because, like mentioned, they can be crumbled up easily.
littleone78
My hubby is home today, he said she finally ate the flakes. I think she waits for them to sink and then stalks them to the bottom. That is what she did with the half pellet I gave her last night.

None of my other fish would eat the freeze dried bloodworms... Plus, I had a bit of an allergic reaction when I touched them. I plan on sending hubby to the pet store to get betta flakes. (I'm not allowed in there anymore!! laugh.gif )
glitterfish
She is adorable. Im glad to hear that shes doing well for you! smile.gif
littleone78
Well, she turns her stripes on and off in a matter of minutes! Its like she has a switch or something!!

She will only eat food if it sinks, I guess she likes chasing it down.

And she sleeps in the oddest way... she sleeps in the corner of the tank perfectly verticle with her nose just a teeeny bit above the gravel.
seahorse
My new girl Bellatrix is the same way she can turn her stripes on and off in seconds. When I brought her home yesterday they were really noticeable and now I can see them only close to her head.

She's also really picky about her food and seems to have a bit of trouble with the betta bio-gold pellets. This morning I did get her to eat a frozen bloodworm. She's much smaller then my other female Narcissa.

This morning I found her sleeping halfway through the little hole in the bottom of her clay pot, it was so cute!

Yeah, she has trouble with the bio gold pellets too - they are too big for her mouth. For now all I have for her is goldfosh flakes, I have get hubby to the store to get the betta flakes.

YAY! Congrat's on your new baby girl Melz.....Now if I could only talk you into having a human baby... laugh.gif She's really pretty biggrin.gif

heartpump.gif rolleyes.gif Congrats shes amazing...so are u going to breed her? don't let aything happen to her
littleone78
Calm down there Della! Ain't no human babies coming around here!!

Thanks fryluv! I don't plan on breeding her - hubby already told me that I can't! Its ok though, she's been flirting with my Red from across the room. laugh.gif so funny to watch!
Devs
biggrin.gif Your little girl is pretty.Do you know that out of all the Betta's that I've owned,I've never had even one that would eat flakes???? blink.gif Strange, but true! laugh.gif
littleone78
I haven't actually seen her eat the flakes... she just looks at them, looks at me, looks back at them and swims away! But I come back an hour later and they are gone, so she must be eating them.

I soaked a Hikari betta pellet and mooshed it up, gave her that - she got excited for that!! So, I think that is the best thing to do for her. I really want to make sure she gets the proper diet - she is so very tiny, I want to see her grow! heartpump.gif
