Tank Aeration

Is it possible to OVER-OXYGENATE the water in a goldfish tank and what effect would it have on the fish?
Anyone know?

No its not possible because only a certain amount of oxygen can be dissolved into water. Like when u make a solution of water and sugar - there's a certain point where the sugar wont dissolve anymore - the solution is saturated.
However with an aquarium, oxygen is always being taken out (by the fish) so u need to continually replace it.
Anyway - the more oxygen the better.
The only thing you'd have to worry about is the current being too strong.

How strong is TOO strong?
I read that the tank water should be moving as:
STILL water = DEATH for Goldfish.

I don't quite understand this: "STILL water = DEATH for Goldfish."
If the fish are being shoved around by the current then it is too strong I usually look from the side of my tank and if the bubbles from the filter are going more than, say, 3 1/2 inches from the back of the tank then I turn down the filter. I know that probably sounds confusing but that's what I do Just make sure the fish aren't being pushed around and that should be just fine

The water should be moving as this allows the oxygen to be dissolved. The surface of the water should be aggitated.
By too strong i mean when the fish are in distress - can't swim against the current etc. The fish should be able to move freely.
If you have an airstone you can keep it nearer the surface of the water as this cuts down on current, but not the amount of oxygen it provides.

I heard that too much dissolved oxygen can cause "gas bubble disease". It is fatal (an air bubble in the blood traveling to the vital organs of the fish, similar to the "bends" in people).
"If A equals success, then the formula is A=X+Y+Z, where X is work, Y is play, and Z is keep your mouth shut."

I think for that to happen there would have to be an awful lot of oxygen in the water - I dont think we need to worry about that if we're just using airstones.

I'd say a filter and an air stone along w/ some plants is a good amount of oxygen.

My experience" gas bubble disease" when you dump straight water from the tap that has a lot of oxygen bubbles into the tank......I had a goldfish that got bubbles on him because of this......Goldfish shouldn't have to fight the current. You should have the top of the water be agitated by a filter or an air stone. They should only have stronger current about 20% of there tank, so that the rest of there tank they can play or even sleep any thing more than this and they will become stressed out

Its dangerious if it gets onto the gills, or they can get the bubbles off of them selfs, this would eventually get into the blood stream
