Hey ya'll! A while back I had a snail tank but they gradually all died (well most of them and then I moved the 3 left to my other tanks) and I have had this tank setting empty for a while.
It's a 20-30 gallon....I'll have to measure it since I'm not sure....prob closer to 20. The lady I bought it from thought it was a 50! One look at it and I knew it didn't come close...but I got it, a stand and lots of extras for a good price anyway.
???s
I think I would like to have tropical in it. (my 75g has goldies and I have betta tanks but no trops).
Do you change the water as often for them as goldies?
I know I would need to add a heater, anything else?
Do they need airstones?
Any favorite fish ya'll might suggest?
And about how many can you keep to a tank ? (I also have an empty 10 gallon that I think some female bettas or a divided male betta tank would be good for)
My dad kept tropicals for years...I should have been paying more attention, huh? rolleyes.gif
Thanks for the help! smile.gif

Ooo you should have some gouramis! smile.gif If I had a spare tank like that I'd keep 1-2 gouramis, schooling tetras, and other peaceful community fish. You could think about some small less aggressive cichlids too, but I don't know anything about them rolleyes.gif Make it all pretty and planted!

Lets see...generally, tropicals don't need so much filtration or large water changes, but it depends what kind of fish you have and how you stock. Pay attention to your water params and go from there. Aeration is not very important in a tank that is not overstocked (plants make it easier too) You could put some nice driftwood in there too...you generally don't need to worry about tropicals poking their eyes out on sharp objects wink.gif

Platies are definitely nice! smile.gif

I agree, I love platys. Ive found gouramis to be too aggressive. Red eye tetras are awesome too. And mollies... They come in all sorts of beautiful colors!!

I have aeration in mine, dont think it can hurt!! I do a water change once every 2 weeks. About 25%. Let us know what you decide!! biggrin.gif

Ooh, that reminds me....a while back in one of the more specialty lfs there were black neon tetras and red (I think that's what they were, but not sure). A big school in each tank and they were so pretty! I might have to go back and check them out. It's not the closest store to me but it's usually worth the trip. smile.gif
Before I decide if I'll set the tank back up, I need to find just the right spot for it. I want it kinda close to my goldies tank so cleanings will be easier. I'll probably play around with the setup some this weekend to see if I have a spot and then go looking at all the types of fish one day(since I'm not real familiar with alot of the names). That'll be fun! biggrin.gif

whoo black neon tetras! I have some and they are great smile.gif

if its a 20, you could go with some angels... as long as its tall. wink.gif
if not, i have a lovely tank atm, which has female bettas (groups of 4 or more) and a pair of female kribs smile.gif
they look lovely in here especially with the plants smile.gif

i would say tetras and gouramis... =) they're really pretty. and tetras are great since there is such a large variety.. and stores like petco and petsmart often have sales each week, so sometimes you can get them for pretty cheap!

harlequin rasboras are also pretty with tetras. smile.gif heartpump.gif

nobody has said anything about pleco's in a tropical tank, they are great cleaners but be carefull the common plec's can get really big 12inch ,but the clown plec's only grow to about 4.5 inch and are great workers at keeping a tank clean, some photo's of my plec's on my webpage at.

(don't worry about the name of my webpage just fish on it lol) you can see a common and a clown plec at the bottom of the page.
fishrpets
heartpump.gif I like all your pics Wizz!
I definetly want a common pleco. I have been wanting one for a while but of course don't want to put them with the goldies. smile.gif
Wizz
Yeah don't put them with the goldies thing is goldies sleep on the gravel and these guys are more active at night time and can latch on to them when they are sleeping.
also if your thinking of having guppies in your tank or molleys make sure to get a breeding trap so you can keep the females out of their way when dropping their young, as they give birth very close to the bottom of the tank.

i think mollies are cool too!

Thanks!
love the pics!

wow, has the cory craze finally ended? thank goodness smile.gif

i don't have any suggestions that aren't above, so good luck setting up ur new tank, and post pics when you decide on everything!
Ponderosa Power
Oh I almost forgot! You should get some cories tongue.gif rofl2.gif

No Justin, the craze hasn't ended yet. I, the one who started it all, have yet to get my cories!
atryeu
*sneaks in* Hehe, I haven't gotten my cories yet either, but that won't be coming for a ways yet since they will be in my 20 gallon, which has absolutely no parts and isn't cycled yet smile.gif LoL

Good luck with the tank! I got my 20 gallon for christmas and can't figure out what schooling fish I want in it aside for cories. I'm leaning towards Glowlight Tetras or Harlequin Rasbora though smile.gif Still a long time to change my mind though, but I think I'm going with one of those two.
balashark
darn, shouldn't have said anything wink.gif lol kissy.

you still haven't gotten 'em yet? don't tell me ur still cycling. or are these going in the new aquarium w/ the black neons?
Ponderosa Power
haha Justin wink.gif

No, I'm not even cycling yet!!!! Cories are a long way away from me still. I'm in the process of disinfecting the qt tank. Once that is done, I think I'll just steal some bio-media from Ruby and Rummert's tank (been over-feeding so there should be plenty of buggies to share) and get my four black neons. After they pass qt (cross your fingers please!) and everyone's settled in, then I'll get my cories. Cories will go into the ten gallon too after that. I hate patience o.O

Have fun with your tropical tank ginger! There are so many neat tropicals to choose from.

Oh yeah! I forgot smile.gif At Petco yesterday I seen a tank full of Black Neons! Nobody has ever sold them around here.. Their colors were pretty faded, but otherwise looked in good health! No dead fishies in the tank and none looked sick smile.gif Bummer I only have a small 20 gallon to use. There are so many fish that would be fun to keep! LoL

Good luck with the tank! Ugh, it's going to be forever before I can get mine going. Filter and a cover will be over $40 and then I still need the stand and gravel before I get it started. -_-
