Hello everyone, hope your New Year is going well. unsure.gif I want to start up a mollie tank (30 gallons)and a Gourmai tank (29 Gallons). Does anyone know the water requirements for these 2 types of fish (including GH & KH)?
I have a water softener system in my house(sodium based), how will this effect my fish? I read some where a while ago that I would have to use a potassium based softener instead of a sodium based, does anyone know if this is right? If I can not obtain a potasium based treatment what can I do about the amount of salt my system adds to the water? I also have a Goldfish tank (only 1 Fish), what problems would the softening system cause in this tank?

Hmmm lets see here...

Well I think that both mollies and gouramis are pretty tolerant of pH as long as it is constant (higher kH). With a water softener you should have a low gH (general hardness). Please test the water for your kH for me...I have a salt based water softener too and my kH is always way high off the chart...and I think it has to do with the softener. The amount of salt in your softened water will not cause any problems..there are only trace amouts. Mollies and Goldfish benifet from a little salt in their tanks anyways. That's all the info I got, so I'm just gonna hang around and see if I can find some answers to my own questions smile.gif

Thanks for the info, I'll watch for the posts.

Im not much good at water chemistry but gouramis like soft and acidic where mollies like hard and alkaline water with salt.
If theres not much in the way of salt then the gourami should be ok.
As for the rest i havent a clue sorry. smile.gif

Maybe the rest of your unanswered questions could be better answered in the water quality section.
