You don't want to use distilled water for sure, because it has all the good minerals and electrolytes missing. I made that mistake and ended up losing a fish over it.
Regular, undistilled bottled water might be ok, but I am not sure-someone else on here should know though. I know it would be really expensive though, especially with a 55 gallon tank.
You don't need to let water sit out at all if you use a dechlorinator (where you add a few drops to the water to remove the chlorine). I just use water straight out of the tap, carefully make sure it is the same temperature as the water already in the tank, then add the recommended amount of dechlorinator to it and add it into the tank. To match the temp I just feel the tank water and match what is coming out of the tap to that by turning on the warm water a little too. You can buy a bottle of dechlorinator at any pet store for less than $5 that will last you quite awhile-although there are some nicer ones out there that cost a bit more but also do things like detoxify ammonia and nitrites from your tank while it cycles.
So you don't have to let water sit out if you match the temperature and add a few drops of water conditioner!

I would definitely go with the tap water. It has, like Jen said, the electrolytes and minerals in it.
A good water conditioner is Prime. The bottle will last you longer than others because of the highly concentrated bottle.

I directly asked a really really good lfs about that a couple weeks ago and they said that the water you get from them is guarenteed to be pure and clean but you need to supplement the water with minerals and such because the process they use to purify the water takens everything out except the H2O. He said to go with the tap water unless there was something really wrong with your tap water. You don't need to let tap water sit out if you use a good conditoner like Prime.
