I am wondering what the best way to serve zucchini to my fish is. They are large, the smallest one is 5", the largest is 10".

I would assume that I need to peel it first, but does it need to be cooked as well? And then do I just chop it and smoosh it, and drop it in? Or would using a clip be better and leave it as a wafer style piece?

Does lettuce need to be cooked before giving it to the fish?

And what about carrots? I'd peel them for sure, but do they need to be cooked?

It corn ok? Do I do it just like with the peas where I heat it up, let it cool, then remove the shell and feed the smooshed insides?

Thanks, just looking to add some more variety for my big guys!

Well, it definetely needs peeling, and everything else is up to the fish. Some like it just the way it is, while others only touch it when its cooked slightly. I'd definetely try to get rid of the seeds inside before putting it into the tank. smile.gif

Thanks Andrea! I shall see what they prefer...knowing them they will eat it up regardless, they aren't too fussy. :-)

Ooh I never heard of carrot- have to try that one. But it would have to be cooked as they'd never be able to gnaw on that. That's an amazing healthy diet you feed your fish. I s'pose when and if my fish get that big then I can try all sorts of stuff..
right now they just sniff the cucumber in the suction clip. I think they think its alive and are a bit afraid of it... unsure.gif

For zucchini, I just cut them to slices & lightly boiled them. The goldies eat the soft centre part & the bristles eat the leftover biggrin.gif

Carrot is very hard, and must be boiled quite long. I chopped them to little pieces, but the goldies doesn't seem to like it.

Lettuce just chop them to little pieces, & lightly boil biggrin.gif

smile.gif My Goldies will only eat veggies that are cooked. Corn is very tough on the digestive track & normally isn't very good to give fish. The only guys that bother with the Carrots, are my Apple Snails, once in a while you see a Bristlenose on them, but they prefer the green veggies. My fish love frozen thawed spinach! flex.gif laugh.gif Hanging with Popeye I guess. My Moor's are the greediest when it comes to Zuchinni/Squash/Cukes. They are known to not see well, but those guys tear those Veggies upand don't like sharing with the other's! rofl3.gif

biggrin.gif I think mine will eat anything that goes in. Eat first think later.
I tend to just pop in some of what is left over from our dinners so the veg will be pretty well cooked. So not sure how many vits are going to be left in the veg. Always give the pea's raw though.

Thanks guys! They had some zucchini tonight, but I think it needed to be a little smaller. Only my two biggest fish ate it. I am looking forward to trying some more new foods with them :-)

My goldfish prefer their zucchini cooked. I cut a chunk off of the zucchini about 2" long, then cut that into 1/8's lengthwise. Then I cook these in the microwave in a bit of water until soft. If cooked enough, it will sink. I leave the skins on, since I have both loaches, snails and bristlenoses and they like the skins. Even the larger goldfish will eat the skin when it is cooked.

I feed lightly cooked cauliflower florets, broccoli, boiled potato, cooked sweet potato, spinach and peas. Actually, whatever I am cooking for myself, I try it with the goldies. I don't give them corn, because I have read it is hard to digest, although you see it in so many goldfish foods. I think it may be the hard shell (like peas) that is the problem. I have also given them very well cooked rice. Also, I will weight down a chunk of tomato and they love that. I take out the seeds since they are kind of messy.

My fish don't like carrots ... they are funny little critters biggrin.gif

Thanks for the great ideas! I have fed them the zucchini a few times, but uncooked, and only thew two big ones will eat it. But I am going to try cooking it now that I know that makes it sink, and I bet all of them will eat it!

I never thought of sweet potato...my daughter eats those all the time, I'll have to try it!

Thanks again :-)
