Remember Rainbow, I had posted when he had a swollen stomach. Just found him dead when I went and checked on my fish. I check and look at them quite often thoughout the day and noticed earlier he was on the bottom of the tank. Second betta I lost in a week. Oldest betta, had him for almost a year. What is going on, I am a responsible fish keeper, unknown diseases taking over. I am recieving an expensive gold half moon betta from Thailand on Wednesday. WHAT SHOULD I DO SO I DON'T LOSE HIM TOO!!!!!!! cry3.gif

Here he is when he was healthy and happy, except getting over fin rot.

Rainbow and Flame who is very healthy, was in divided 10 gallon. The tank is cycled with a filter, i use the pop bottle cut in half for very little turbulence with filter which is in the middle where Flame is and is fine with it, change 30% water weekly. Feed them pellets and once a week feed them frozen blood worms. Readings are Ammonia 0, Nitries 0 and Nitrates 10, Ph 8. Suddenly Rainbow swelled up belly and did not feed him for 2 days and then fed him peas which he ate, I think it was constipation because it came on sooo fast. With the last one that died was in 3 gallon, after first water change found him dead in the next couple of days, he always hid behind clay pot i had in tank and did not seem as active as the other 2 bettas, but thought that was his personality, but I guess I was wrong. I am going to get an expensive betta from Thailand on Wednesday and was planning on putting in 10 gallon. Flame is very healthy, which tells me that Rainbow did not have a spreadable disease. Should I put new betta in 3 gallon or should I put him in 10 gallon. I don't want to lose him, he cost me alot of money because of shipping.

ANYONE??????
Imber
Sorry to hear about your two losses cry3.gif That has to be really rough.

Unfortunately I don't know which would be best for your new betta, but if it were me personally I would sterilize the 3g and prep it for the new betta. That little guy's making a long journey and he is going to be stressed and more vulnerable to any possible bad things lurking in your other tank so even if your healthy betta's immune system fends them off just fine, the new guy might not. Then after maybe a month of observation and getting the new guy settled in, add him into the 10g as long as nothing bad pops up in that tank. This is just what I would do to be extra cautious and I don't know if it is necessary so hopefully somebody with more experience can guide you further.

Hey Love,I think I'm in agreement with Imber. I would take all the precautions I could on the new fish no matter where he came from. Although Flame looks healthy, why take the chance. And truthfully, although you're paying alot of money for this Betta you're getting,it's not always 100 % that they'll be totally free of illness either-just the traveling alone can bring something on. Put him in Q-tank and if he seems to do well, and Flame's still going strong, then I'd consider them sharing their housing. Good luck, and I can't wait to see this new boy of yours! exactly.gif

Sorry to hear about Rainbow and Flame! heartpump.gif

I would also not put the new fish in the 10g right away... I would put in whatever you have to let him adjust and do the QT, just to be safe! Please let us know how it goes! smile.gif Best wishes with your new arrival!

Sorry that you lost Flame and Rainbow. I think I would quarantine the new betta for a month, too, just to be on the safe side.

Good luck with him, and please let us know when he arrives smile.gif

What is best way to sterilize the 3 gallon. Will put new betta in there on Wednesday when I get him. Will have pics up shortly after he is settled in tank. I will keep a close eye on him for awhile before adding him to the 10 gallon. I have heard that some people with dividers let there bettas flare at eachother (seeing eachother through divider) and in a couple of days they usually stop flaring. I would like to try that but not too sure if it would be too stressful for the bettas. Opinions please.

I would use a bleach solution to sterilize the tank.

My bettas have a divider in the tank, but it is semi-opaque, so they don't really see each other too well. You can mask the divider with plants on both sides to make them less visible to each other.
