Hi there,

Since I am moving fish into new tank, was thinking about getting a beautiful betta for 10 gallon, cycled tank.
Is there any freshwater fish that are compatible with bettas?

Thanks

I have asked this before. I think the only ones that will work are corydoras in the 10 gallon. Maybe you want to divide the tank and have more than one betta?
Saivite
Hmmm, yes, I did think about that - how does the filter work with a divided tank? Does the water circulate just as well ?

Do you mean oxygen for your betta using circulation?

Most people don't use filters for bettas. I think you already know this but bettas can breath directly from the surface unlike goldfish thanks to it's labrinth.

and if you want the filter for sucking out the dirty stuff it depends on your filter and gph to get both sides.

My divided 10g is split 3 ways, and I have a filter in the middle compartment with the female(it made her the least mad because her fins are short) and the heater on the left side. It still made her a little grumpy so I hung a plastic plant on the output which mutes it enough that it doesn't circulate the water through the sides that well, but my test results are always good and it does a good job of dispersing the heat. I actually think the added stress from a strong filter is probably not worth the benefit. Also, I keep the water level 2-3 inches lower than I normally would they're jumpers!

As far as maintenance goes, I just do about a 10-20% water change with a gravel vac once a week. The tank is always way cleaner than my other tanks so I think I could actually go longer on waterchanges, but I do everybody else once a week so I figured I might as well do them. When I first started my changes I would take the siphon out and have to restart it in each individual space, but I figured out a really easy way to do it. I got the smallest size they had, start it by sucking on the end with a turkey baster and then cover the sucky end with my hand when I move it between compartments. That way I never have to restart!

This is probably way more than you wanted to know, but I was really happy when I figured out that cleaning trick and just had to share it with the world! laugh.gif

Oh, that is a very good point. Too much circulation can stress them. Good luck!

Thanks! I'm new to Bettas and Golds, learning a lot the past few months. The filter is pretty strong, P200 for the now- overcrowded 10 gallon wiht 3 fancy golds.
So, sounds like for the Betta, I can go back and use a smaller filter (which I have but didn't work for golds).

Ok - thanks guys! good to know biggrin.gif

Actually...I've seen a few meshy-like dividers recently that allows proper circulation. Let me see if I can find that again..

You can cut down on the current from hang on the back type filters, like aquaclears and whispers, by draping a piece of filter floss in front of the outflow. I just lift the lid and drape the filter floss down over the outflow and put the lid back down and hold the top ends of the rectangle of floss under the lid.

Hope that makes sense biggrin.gif

I wouldn't reccommend anything with a Betta I learned that the hard way oops.gif
