Well, the crab isnt going to fare well.. they need:

1. warm water, 78-82
2. Salt in their water, more then goldies like
3. Land to get up on

thats just the begining. that poor crab...

um, tell ur friend to watch his crab more closely. he's getting air somehow (climbing the filter tube, air tubing, plants). from experience the temp doesn't matter as much as air, calcium, and salt to a brackish level.

in the wild these are beach dwelling animals, pet stores are amiss selling them in complete aquarium setups. the best thing i could do for the one i had bought was get plastic plant netting along the back wall so he could climb out of the water easier. mine had actually taken to stradling the wall of the filter for long periods of time until i got him the plant wall.

How cute!! What a great pic.

Fiddlers most definitely do breathe air and actually prefer to live more on land than underwater. They will eventually die if they do not get air. Thats why they always escape from aquariums.

They are also brackish or saltwater crabs and cannot live their entire lives in freshwater. Doing so will greatly shorten the lives (a year is not long when you consider that they, like many other crabs, can live several years).

Finally they will catch and eat any fish they are able to. I have seen this happen before. You definitely do not want one in with goldfish who may be slow and clumsy. They are an easy catch. The crabs often attack at night when the fish are asleep on the bottom.

Anyway, thanks for doing research before bringing home a new pet. Just because you see something being done in a pet store does not mean it is the correct way to keep a pet.
