Full Version: Uv Sterilizers For Eliminating Gw
Forum > The Goldfish Topics > Goldfish Tanks > Water problems? Questions about water quality?

I have tried everything, but green water keeps returning to my tank. I've pretty much decided to turn to UV to help kill the algae. I personally don't mind the green but my family does, so i need to do this for them.

My questions are:

1. Will the UV destroy the algae that grows on the tank glass.
2. I have a 72gal. tank, what wattage would i need?
3. What is a recommended UV sterilizer. Since i'm getting one, i want to get a good one that also kills bacteria and parasites.

Thank you for the help!

Hi,

A UV will help with green water, bacteria and parasites, but it won't get rid of the algae on the glass sad.gif

Toothless has a good thread pinned at the top of the equipment forum on uv sterilisers.

I myself use an 18w coralife uv on my 55g and it got rid of the green water in about 2-3 days. Don't know how effective it is on the parasites and such because I have no way of measuring the number of parasites. I'm not so keen on the annual cost of replacing the uv bulb because it costs about half the cost of the uv (and that includes a free bulb)
