The Use Of MEds
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I just want to touch bases with some people here......My site and My board has always been the most natural way of doing things....I do use some meds but Not the hard core meds and If a person has such a problem you think that they would need the antibiotics Please Send them to Koi Vet they know more about this kind of stuff. I don't want this get into a fight.....but this is not the board to be prescribing drugs...like the hard core ones

That sounds like good advice.
I know that I usually suggest meds. But I do it when it sounds like something that I've had happen to me before and meds worked.
That's the great thing about this forum. Getting all sorts of advice from people who have had similar problems. Remember the days before the internet? If you were lucky, you'd be able to find it in a book. Otherwise you'd have to call the local fish store and hope they give you the right info and that there not just trying to sell you something.

The only thing that I have ever suggested is melafix. I have never ever used anything else therefore I have no experience with anything other than melafix I think that is the right thing to do Koko

Melafix, now that's some great stuff. Especially if it's just an injury or fungus. It's probably the only all natural thing I can think of to use.

I agree although

Koivet is a very good message board but most of the moderators on that board are used to dealing and dosing for ponds. Lot's of good information on the site but for fancy goldfish I would go to the goldfishconnection.com's help health Q&A. Rick and Doc J. are long time friends and share their expertise.
Rick's moderators have a boat load of experience with fancy goldies and have used and rated just about every med on the market and will give you the right advice after you give them tank water levels and symptoms.
They have also come into contact with just about every fish disease known to man with treatment wins and losses.
Store bought water antibiotics are useless in all respects so don't even waste your money no matter what the petstore clerk says. Using the right least toxic product for the right ailment will go a long way to saving your fish and most systemic bacterial infections are untreatable without injection.
You would be surprised how very few of the products in the pet store actually work and warrant space in the medicine cabinet.
The only real preventative is perfect water, a good regular thorough maintenance schedule and Quarantine, Quarantine, Quarantine all new fish for at least 30 days (60 is better) with a salt treatment, 1 fluke treatment and a Romet based antibiotic feed. Your fish will be completely clean at the end of QT. This is why Rick's fish are so expensive as he completes a 30 day QT for you.
Steralizing new live plants with a 4ppm Potassium Permangenate solution for 24 hours as well.
Medicine soup is the most common cause of fish death, misuse of OTC meds kills more fish than the ailments themselves. So like most long time goldie keepers say, QT and when in doubt the first thing to reach for is the salt.

Thank you! this is all I have been trying to say. I dont want someone to say "hay use this med" and then come back and say that killed my fish. I would rather send this person to a place that knows more about Meds. This message board is mostly in helping the old fashion way.....I myself have been raising goldfish for along time and still learn new things all the time. When or If I have a big problem with a goldfish that needs more than the basic treatments, salt, melafix, ect.....I go to Koivet, or Aquaticmanias. I do help on that form too but there are people there like Barb that now alot about fungus and other hard core problems. I just dont want someones Loved fish to get hurt......Thats all folks

I think it's me who suggested many antibiotics. Sorry for that.
