Full Version: Big Oranda Ate A Small Butterfly Pleco

my oranda named boxer has eaten a butterfly pleco, its about 1 1/2 inches.Boxer is about 7 inches. I have transferred him to my 75 gal hospital tank because the other goldfishes seem to bother him a lot.Boxer is not eATING ANYMORE and can't close his mouth.help please

A butterfly plec as far as i know doesnt have any spines so you should be ok for it getting stuck. If you look in his mouth what can you see, is the algae eater at the back of the throat or in his gills?
Theres a thread just below this one of someone having a fish that swallowed another algae eater and it gives tips on how to remove. If he seems ok then let nature take its course. He might be using his grinders at the back of the throat to break it down if it is that far back, which will explain the open mouth.
If he starts to get distressed with coughing movements, swimming backwards or shaking his head then you may need to go in and retrieve whats left.

boxer has finally spitted the pleco out! when i came home i just saw the pleco skull on the bottom of the tank. I have returned boxer back to his own 100 gal tank.hes eaten a lot since then. thank god!

That is wonderful news indeed! Just watch him the next few days to make sure the little pleco didn't do any damage to his mouth... thumbup.gif

LOL OMGOSH u kno it says how dangerious a pleco is to goldies but they never say how dangerious a big goldies is to a little pleco lol!!! Poor little fellow didn"t kno what he was geting himself into lol!!!
