Full Version: Brown Algae
Forum > The Goldfish Topics > Goldfish Tanks > Water problems? Questions about water quality?
OldHag
Hi, I've been attacked by brown algae in both my tanks and my questions are:
Why do you get brown algae? Is it because the light or the water quality?
Is there something I can do to stop it (besides scraping and cleaning every other day?)
Ranchugirl
Annette, brown algae problems usually mean not enough light. What kind of tank light do you have - how much wattage, compared to how big of a tank? smile.gif
Nattviska
Not enough light? blink.gif Why is that?
I've been trying to minimize the amount light the last couple of days to get rid of it! krazy.gif

Oh, by the way (sorry for borrowing this thread!).. Is brown algae harmful to the plants?
koko
brown algea can kill some plants if its covering the leaves and they can get there light.....

The other thing to consider about brown algae is a
BristleNose...biggrin.gif
Nattviska
You mean ancistrus? I used to have one but it sometimes chased the goldfish. Also the goldies wouldn't leave the algae wafers alone. smile.gif

Oooh, I have no idea but the fry tank, that is most attacked, stands by a window. I thought to that algae (is it green algae?) were caused by too much light. I don't want an ancistrus in the fry tank, I don't know what'll happen...

I've also heard that brown algae appears in rather new tanks and that it will settle down after a while... ?

Brown algae means your fish are sick doesn't it?

How to get rid of it: Cure ur fish and keep the aquarium dark for a few days so the algae dies.

just my thoughts
koko
Brown algae doesnt mean your fish are sick hun.

Brown is due to Phosphates in the tank, or high amounts of nitrates, or not enough light.....

Green algea pea soup we like to call it is cause by to much sunlight geting in the tank....

Brown algae can be cured,,

1. Rubbernose or BushyNose Pleco.
2 more water changes.
3. cleaner filters or higher filration rate.
4. less food fed to the fish.
5. Phossorb that can be added to the filter.

Its not bad to have just more of an annoyance biggrin.gif
OldHag
OK thanks! I'll see what I can do!

Anytime hun, just wanted to set it straight biggrin.gif

yea but what about:

DO NOT use sick fish as water will turn brown instead. If fishes fall sick in between, water will turn brown too. You can add a small clip fan (cheap) to blow away the heat generated from the light, as I have done. Feed the fishes with HIKARI sink pellets to build up ammonia level to kick start the algae.

Green Water Cultivation

the green water...caused by algae will turn brown because of the sick fish
koko
Yes Brown water as in the soup water, its not brown aglae like on the walls and ornaments. This person was trying to get pea soup not brown soup....I can understand were we might see that of that sentence hun....biggrin.gif

Great Article though biggrin.gif
GFandy
ahh gotcha, did not read that it was on the walls and such and not in the water
koko
No problem thats why we are always learning hun biggrin.gif

i thought it was too much silica in the water.. or phosphates.. ok yea probably was, its in new tanks mostly, not sure why you would get a sudden bloom.. but otos are amazing at eating it though, they totaly wiped it out in my trop tank smile.gif
koko
The reason you can get them in older tanks is that the nitrates or Diatoms will get higher and higher and cause it to grow, its no harm to fish at all just more of an ugliness to us biggrin.gif
OldHag
Well, now I have green algae instead, and I've also found some tiny, tiny snails...
guess they came on the plants... they eat algae don't they... just hope they won't reproduce in hundreds...
koko
can you get me photo of them hun, some will and some wont.....Green algae I like unless its hair algae and I get rid of that stuff so fast rofl3.gif
OldHag
I have only this pic, difficult since they are so tiny...
user posted image
it's crawling on the glass...
koko
Well they will eat aglae but they will reproduce like no tomorrow sad.gif those are called mystery snails...Oh man I hate those guys....Dojos love them though rofl2.gif
OldHag
I was afraid you'd say that... I was happy to have something that ate the algea since I don't want an algae eater with my fry. But, I'll guess I'll have too keep an eye on the tank then and suck out the snails when I clean the gravel.
