I think my 'female' betta, Azul is actually a male. I bought her at my local fish store about a month ago to replace my three year old betta, Azuis, who passed away in August.

Up until last week she has been in my ten gallon tank with my other tropicals, but she was starting to nip my female guppies, so I took her out and put her in my old 2.5 gallon tank.

Well, yesterday when I came home, I noticed that the top of the water was covered with a bubble nest, wich I am pretty sure females don't blow! And when I looked her over for the white spot that indicates that she is a female, I discovered that she dosn't have one.

So my betta is actually a he! tongue.gif

Herm, my female bettas have never blown bubble nests this big....

And black oranda, I didn't mean that she literally changed sexes. Sorry for the wording.

Does anyone know how to acurately sex a betta?
Ranchugirl
Besides the white spot in her anal area, I dont know of any other way to sex a betta, but I am sure there is another one.....
Where in the pet store was your *female*? In a glass bowl all by herself, or in a tank with other females? You know, there are short tailed male bettas around, maybe the pet store just assumed because its a short tail, that its a female.... smile.gif

She was in a tank with the other female bettas, but her finage is definately getting longer now that she is on her own.
Ranchugirl
Well, maybe then you got a male after all!
I got some very young males from a breeder in Miami, and if they wouldnt finally grow some finnage, you would never believe they are males! smile.gif

Rachugirl can we keep females with other females
if so im guessing we have to keep them in a
pretty big Aquarium like maby a 20 or 15 gal?
Ranchugirl
I have up to 5 females in the 10 gl tank. You can see it on the picture of my setup someplace else here, and they do just fine together. When I add another female to an established tank, I just put the female in, and feed them right away with something they like, like bloodworms, and I never had any other female bother the new arrival....
