Just wondering if your GF tanks have heaters or not?
If you do what tempature do you set it at? And why?
I have none in my GF tanks...
Thanks,
Marc

Hi Marc

You don't have to put a heater on your tank, I don't use one and my tank is usually at 75-78 Degrees.
I don't think it hurts to have one on there but it's not a need to have one. Hope that helps some for now. I know some people do use them so hopefully someone will come along to explain that.

Nay (unless ur house gets very cold on winter)
Goldfish can cope a wiiiiiide range of temperature (as long as the change is gradual).
There's a theory that said if u keep ur goldfish at a constant temperature all the time, their metabolism rate is faster and their organs always work at optimum condition, hence they'll wear out sooner and ur goldfish will die of "old age" sooner. Soooo exposing ur fish to mild seasonal temperature up & downs is actually beneficial

I use heaters in all my tanks and keep the temp stable at 68*(winter)You would do fine with no heater as long as there is no drastic change in temp as fluctuations can make goldies ill

I, too, have heaters in all my tanks. Some tanks (bubbleeye, celestial, veiltails) I like to keep warmer - 74-78 degrees. Some tanks are on outer walls of the house and in the winter it can get very cold - we get -25F at times and the walls, insulated and all, can still get a layer of ice on the inside. I want my tanks to remain constant in temps - so the heaters are necessary.
If you are going to get a heater, it is worth it to invest in the best - a fully submersible one of quality. I have found that the "cheapies" end up having to be replaced yearly. In the long run, it is cheaper to buy the good one in the first place. I like the fully submersible ones - I attach them laying lengthwise on the bottom of the tank with a bubble stick under them. The heat is well distrubuted that way - no warm or cold pockets of water. Make sure you either buy or make heater covers for all the heaters, though. Goldfish are notorious for leaning up against them and burning wens, tails or bubbles on them. The covers will prevent accidents.

I was just wondering what were the advantage of having a heater in a GF tank... Mine has been running for about a year without a heater and I think I will leave it that way... My basement (where the tank is) dosent get overly cold in the winter...
Thanks for all you input
