Full Version: Urgent! Filter Problem

Hi there!

I hope it's okay to post this here, I had no idea where else to put it. The filter is actually in my ADF tank.

The power has been going out an awful lot over the last 2 or 3 weeks.. Anywhere from 5 minutes to 4 hours and it's been happening every few days lately -_-

Last night they went out at midnight and came on shortly after 3am. It woke me up so I checked my fish tanks to make sure the lights were out and plugged the filters back in (I unplug them when the power goes out... sometimes they don't start back up when the power comes back on and I leave them plugged in). Anyways, I plugged my filters back in and none seemed to have any problems at the time. I woke up this morning again to a weird noise though. The filter in my ADF tank was not working and the motor was making a weird noise. I unplugged it again and tried awhile later but it's still doing it.

I'm not sure of the exact filter specs, but it came with an Eclipse 5 hex kit. All I know about it is that it's an Eclipse filter.

Any ideas what's going on and how I can get it going again? I cannot afford to buy another filter for the tank and I don't have the time to do a water change every other day from now on for the tank sad.gif

I took the filter upstairs and took it apart. Everything was nice and clean still. I filled the sink up and plugged it in but it still wouldn't work so I took the intake tube off and tried again. It seems something is wrong with the impeller sad.gif The magnetic ends are spinning, but the little things that twirl the water or whatever they do are not wanting to spin. I was able to flick it a little while it was on and it started to work again. After I hooked it back to the tank, it didn't want to start so I had to take it apart and flick the impeller a little to get it going again.

It's currently running, but any idea what is going on with it?

1) I think you are right to post here - your question is about equipment - not froggies! smile.gif

2) What kind of filter is it? How long have you had it?

3) Is this the only (I am assuming Yes) electrical piece you have in the same room that is fuctioning intermittently?

4) Is the filter the only appliance plugged into the outlet? If not, is the filter plugged into an extension cord or a surge protector?

5) DON'T PANIC! ( teehee.gif ) The frogs will be OK until you get the filter situation sorted out... until then: when was their last WC (water change) and what size tank are they in - is it planted, unplanted, are there any other critters in there?

Sorry - I cannot edit the previous post -

I see that it is an Eclipse Hex 5 (nice!)... I meant to say first and foremost - have you tried adding water to the filter directly, filling it up, and then see if it works?

I have had this happen with my Eclipse tanks...

And don't worry - if the filter motor is blown, Marineland products have a two year warranty and they have, in my experience, been very good about honoring it!

LoL! Thanks for the replies smile.gif Is the warrenty any good without the reciept? After having the tank run for almost 3 months without problems, I threw out the receipt -_- LoL

2) How long have you had it?

I originally got it at the end of June, but it's been running since the first week of July without problems.

3) Is this the only (I am assuming Yes) electrical piece you have in the same room that is fuctioning intermittently?

Yes... Everything else, including the other tank stuff, has been running like normal.

4) Is the filter the only appliance plugged into the outlet? If not, is the filter plugged into an extension cord or a surge protector?

It's a surge protector... I have very few outlets in my room and they are in very inconvient places -_- The only other things plugged into the surge protector are: Tank Light, Filter, Heater (all for the froggy tank) and my Playstation 2 LoL.

5) DON'T PANIC! ( teehee.gif ) The frogs will be OK until you get the filter situation sorted out... until then: when was their last WC (water change) and what size tank are they in - is it planted, unplanted, are there any other critters in there?

Last WC was last weekend (25% or so). It's a 5 gallon tank, as you noticed wink.gif LoL There is one lone little plant in there (it's trying to sprout more leaves but they just haven't quite made it yet), and it's a species only tank.. Only has my 2 little female froggies smile.gif

The filter is still running, but if the power goes out again, I'm sure the impeller will have more problems starting up again.

Thanks smile.gif

LoL I like the Edit feature too tongue.gif

"I meant to say first and foremost - have you tried adding water to the filter directly, filling it up, and then see if it works?"

Yep, I tried that when I brought it upstairs to see if there was something in there preventing the parts from moving correctly (it was shockingly clean for a filter o.0 Only a small bit of brown algae near the outflow holes LoL).

OK - I would say, if the filter is new, and plugged into a surge protector with no other apparent problems, it may actually be the motor unit of the filter.

Ummmmmmm... reciept - from my experience, it depends which cust. rep you get on the phone. Like any other company, they employ intelligent and unintelligent personnel alike... I would suggest x4406... at Marineleland... rolleyes.gif

LoL Thanks smile.gif I'm busy tomorrow, but I'll see if I can call and get any info on Tuesday about it!

I think the booklet had something about replacement parts and such. I'll have to dig that back up as well perhaps.

Thanks again! smile.gif
