Hi there! biggrin.gif

I have few links that will help you to understand this a bit better smile.gif :

Sponge filters and cartridge filters work in the same way. The gravel becomes the place for beneficial bacteria to grow when using undergravel filters. However, just any old filter in a tank will not do. things like the size of the fish, how many, and how many gallons the tank is, must be taken into consideration when striving to provide sufficient filtration to keep a growing goldfish's water clean and clear.

So, how many gallons is your tank?

How many fish and how big are they?

How long have you had the tank set-up and running?

If you provide me the answers from above, I can help you figure out what needs to be done to upgrade your filtration to a rate that is good enough for goldfish..... smile.gif
