I forget... how many times in a 60 minute period should your water run through your filter?

The general rule of thumb is 10X.
So if you have a 10 gallon tank, your filter should be rated for 100 gallons per hour.

And reciprically, if your filter has 100gph, it is best suited to a 10 gallon GOLDFISH tank - but might be condsidered overkill for a tropical fish tank of the same size!
I just mention it so that if you get contrary info at the pet store, you will have a point of reference! GF need more filtration than the common tank recommendations. Unfortunatley, this is not often adressed when purchasing fish.
So - as Fantail said - 1x filtration is the ideal minimum for GF!

Oops, little typo on Graham's part--it's 10X filtration. Don't want ya to get confused.

ow and its always nice to have 1 ore 2 small filters in the tanks as well, so the goldfish popo is sucked from as many corners of the tank as posible:P
