Full Version: First Ever Peas For My Fish!

My fish just had their first ever peas! As far as I know anyway, I don't think Joanna said she ever tried it with them. They ate them right up, although I had to be creative to make sure that they each got an equal amount (2 each).

I did soak them in tank water, de-shell them, and smoosh them up first, although my fish are so huge they could probably eat them unsmooshed.

How many peas are ok to feed? I know they are used for constipation relief, so if you give too many does that cause, um, the opposite problem? Eeeuuuw.

Should I feed them peas every day, or just as an occasional treat? Is two peas each ok (these are gigantic commons)? Or can you give them more? I am totally new to feeding them anything besides flakes, and these fish have only been with me for a week.

If I add lettuce to their diet, how often is that ok to feed? If I use a lettuce clip are they going to fight over it? (Four huge commons)

When feeding vegetables to them, do I decrease the amount of flakes/pellets they usually get?

Just wondering how much veggies to feed them at a time, how often they should get them, and if I need to adjust their regular food to allow for the extras.

Thank you! I am so full of questions...I have only had these fish for a week!

Edit: Oops..I missed the pea post farther down, sorry for making a new one.

Good for you for adding such healthy variety to their diet! biggrin.gif

Personally I use peas as a food replacement.... this is typically how I feed.

day 1. - home made gel food
day 2 - flakes or pellets soaked
day 3 - gel food again
day 4 - peas (and I clean the tank the day they have peas wink.gif so no poo floatin all week)

On the flakes and pellets day, I also hang in various fruits and veggies for their enjoyment smile.gif

They probably wont fight over it, but if they do you can always buy 2 or 3 veggie clips and hang one on each wall of the tank so they have room to nibble one all their own smile.gif

Hope this helps a bit!
