Forum > The Goldfish Topics > Goldfish Tanks > Water problems? Questions about water quality?

Well, I was reading in one of the fish magazines at work, and was shocked by some goldfish waste calculations!

a goldfish increases in mas 8 times, every time it double in legth...

So a 4 inch goldie makes the same amount of waste as 8 one inch goldies!!!

this makes so much sense, when people come to me and wonder why they have had 12 commons in a 10 gallon tank for a few months with no problems, then suddenly their all dying, and the tank is filthy....

(I also dont feel so bad having my littlest overstocked for the moment.... but worse about having my big guys crowded)

Interesting info!

Most people leave mass out of the equation when calculating how to stock. That is one of the reasons why the "1 gallon per inch of fish" rule doesn't work for so many fish. It really only works for small tropicals like tetras.

Interesting.

Better be ready for more waste as my fishie grows.
