I asked this question over at the betta forum, but know one seemed to know the answer; maybe you guys can help me out.

I have a 3 gallon plastic tank with a betta. The betta is "special needs" and very suseptible to rot, so I bought him a 25w Hydor for his tank for the approaching winter. Now...I know 25w is a lot for three gallons, that that is the smallest size they had that was suitable for my tank. I hear I'll be okay as long as I have enough circulation in the tank to keep the heat evenly spread. I only have a sponge filter...will this be enough circulation? Any tips on setting up the filter and heater? Should the be close together etc.

I'm going to try and cycle the spong filter in my tropical tetra tank before setting it up with my betta.

I'd mount the heater horizontally on the tank wall so it is located above the sponge filter
