well i had gold fish for like 3 years and i havent had one for like 1 year coz i had bad luck with them. so i decited to try again and ive already learned few basic things that i didnt knew befor ty koko for this lovly site

here is my 1st quastion

1. ive got his filter>>> http://www.aqua-food.hu/halak/images/44843300.jpg it is recomended for 10-50 liter aquarium ( thats 2.6 galon-13.2 galon aquarium). Is this filter good enaught for gold fish? it pumps 220 L/h thats 58.1 galons per houre i think.
ive got a 6.6 galon aquarium witch is a bit small for a gold fish and im gona get miself a
18.4 galon aquarium or maiby 28 galon

2. ive got this air pump>>> http://www.discus.com.pl/sklep/images/atman/at-a1500.jpg
it can pump 2 liters/min thats only 0.5 galons/min but the shooper said its ok for 10.5 galon tank. so i i get miself 18.4 galon tank or larger i should realy get a better air pump right?

3. ive heard if you have a gold fish you have to have lights. i dont have any. my aquarium is right next to my window witch i heard isnt very good coz i can get alge, but i clean the internal walls of the aquarium so i dont get any. and my quastion is if the nature light sint good enaught for gold fish. today when i went to a gold fish shoop they told me that telesope gold fish dont need lights is that tru?

and for the end i would like to say nice jobe koko i see the forum has changed in last 3 years alot

Welcome backl, guppy lover....

As far as goldfish, you already know that you will have difficuties in a small tank....but if you get the larger aquarium, you will lessen the amount of work you will need to do to keep the water parameters in good order.

The filter you have now, at 58 gallons per hour is barely enough to filter a 5.8 gallon tank for your goldies. The rule of thumb on filtratrion is that you want to run the entire volume of your tank through the filter at least 10 times every hour. The simple way to calculate this is to multiply the gallons of your tank times 10 and that is the amount of gallons you will want your filter to pump. An 18 gallon tank should have a filter that can pump at least 180 gallons per hour, a 28 gallon tank should have the abiltiy to pump at least 280 gph. I like to aim for a bit more, and, if you have a full load of fish in your tanks, you should aim for more like 12 to 15 times an hour.

As far as the air pump, though, it is really up to you. Air features are run for your enjoyment, for the fish to play in, and to help lift water from the bottom of the tank to the surface so it will come in contact with oxygen. To a lessor degree, it imparts oxygen into the water. A small air pump will still run a nice water feature for you. If you want multiple airstones or a particularly large or long bubble wall, you may need a bigger pump.

Lights are nice for the fish, because it allows you to see them all the more. It can also be disturbing for fish to have it get dark, and then you turn the room's lights on, and off and then on again. With a tank light, you can leave their lights on until they are ready to sleep and not be disturbed again until morning. This is not essential though. The best color for a fish comes from a combination of good food and full sunshine in a pond. Natural light from outside in concentrations high enough to grow nice delicious green algae will also brighten your fish.

You may want to consider getting a hood and light anyway - for having a top on the tank is always a plus in my book. It keeps out stray dust, cats, kids, and rubber balls, and keeps in goldfish.....

ty for your answear

wow so if i want to get a 28 gallon tank i need a filter that filters 280 galons evry houre thats 1060 liters evry houre thats like 5 times more powerful then my pump. thats one very expansive pump if you ask me. i know gold fish are messy but wow they need huge filters sad.gif

and an aquariums with lights are very very expansive i would spend 2 times more for a 13 galon tank with lights. i can spend 2 times less money on 28 galon tank but my fishy would loke better under lights sad.gif

the tank would be coverd with glass on top but no lights, so now i only need a mega filter unsure.gif

oh and one more quastion what about the watter. when i change the watter ill use a bucket or something but what do i do when ill have to change 10-20% of the watter where do i store all that watter? i used to had bigg watter buckets and i neded aldest 2 5 liter buckets of watter it took alot of space in my room but what will i do now when i get a 100 liter aquarium lots of watter to store unsure.gif

oh and what about the rocks ive noticed that when i had goldfish they like to nimble at rocks alot but sometimes they get one or 2 rocks stuck in the mouth. so what do i do get tiny rocks? but that cant be good coz they could eat them or get bigg rocks? so they cant pick them up, but that cant be good as well because they like to nimble post-4056-1113060392.gif

Hi, just to reiterate what Daryl says, more filter = better water. yes, at least 10x vol of tank per hour! Crazy huh?! Goldfish are VERY dirty!! I've got a 200litre tank, and I've got 2400lph filter. (actually, 2 x 1200lph!) -This is the best thing you can spend your money on! Natural light is okay for goldfish, not bad, but can make algae bloom, algae is good for fish to eat, but makes the tank unsightly! Depends on what you want... I've got some tanks with natural light, some in shade and some with artificial light. -If you want live plants and you don't have any direct sunlight you will need an artificial light, but you don't need live plants, it is good for the tank, but not essential. Maybe start off with the tank and the filter, and then once you've got that all set up, and your wallet feels a little heavier you can invest in a light. wink.gif

Water.... If you can find space, a plastic rubbish bin is good to collect old water in. Maybe get a siphon to help get the dirt out of the gravel (rocks), and have a separate 'new water' bucket, to put the replacement water in (10litre bucket is a good size, big, but small enough to lift when full of water.)

Rocks, 2-4mm rocks are good. -they'll be too small to get stuck in their mouths and not big enough to swallow, if you're worried about that... I've got sand in a couple of my tanks, really fine sand, my goldies sift this out very quickly, and if they do swallow a few grains, it goes straight through them no problems!

There are water conditioners that will work immediately - so you may or may not have to store water - are you "aging" the water to remove chlorines and such? If that is the case, check the fish/pet stores for a water conditioner that binds and detoxifies your water. This will allow you to use the water "instantly" without having to store it overnight. If you still wish to store it, the large plastic rubbish cans are great as said above.

As far as rocks, I would reccommend going larger. The problem with sand is that, as the fish suck it in and pump it out through their gills, it acts just like abrasive sandpaper - and can irritate or injure the delicate tissues of a fish's gills. Also, as the fish root around on the bottom of the tank, they will constantly be stirring up the sand - and some fine sand may stay in suspension, causeing a hazy or cloudy look to your water.

I run my tanks bare bottom, with large, decorative rocks scttered here and there an a decoration or two, or some plants (fake or real, depending on the tank). It stays squeaky clean, there is no gravel for parasites to hide in, and there is no gravel for the fish to swallow. Not using volume for the gravel also gives more water volume - always a good thing in my book for the goldies. smile.gif

few more houres to go and im gona buy miself a new aquarium. cant wait. yeah ill buy some medium sized rocks for the bottom then ill put the bigg rocks at the top. so ill save some money on sand;) and ill put some fancy bigg rocks that are more expansive on the top. the filter will probably have 550 liter/h thats 145 galons/houre and the tank will be a 112 liter one. ill probably add in the tank my 220l/h filter so that goldis will be lees popy. and ill also remove all the popo with my sucking tube. so that should take care of the popo problem eh:P? ill buy miself a new filter iventuly when i save enaugh money.

so gl for me i guss ow and ty for that watter thing yeah ill use "instant" watter

well i now i got a 112 liter tank with a filter that can pump 500l/h ill also add my old pump in so i will have total 750l/h still not powerfull enaugh i got a huge air pump so ill have alot of oxygen in my tank. ill post some photos of my tank and also ill show you my send and you tell me if ive chosen the right one. then ill probably have to make another topic in the watter section coz i got lots of quastions

would be so nice if i could get a msn of some one to help me;) hope i get a friend soon so far i like daryl hes/shes very kind=) and nice
