Full Version: I Thought It Was Dead!?!

About two and half weeks ago I bought a snail for 20 cents...its just a tiny little spiraly looking thing, I'm not sure what type.

Anyways, it had'nt moved for at least two weeks. It stayed in the same place, I mean it did not move at all. I was certain it was dead. I just kept forgetting to fish it out when I changed the water, I'm glad I forgot.

Imagine my suprise, after thinking this thing was dead for two weeks, when I saw it climbing up the side of my tank tonight. I about passed out. There wasn't a doubt in my mind that this thing was dead and now its climbing up the tank...now I've got to think of an extra special name for this thing. It has survived salt in the tank and everything...I can't believe its alive! ohmy.gif

biggrin.gif Thats a snail for you. If they are inside their shells, chances are they arent dead. Normally when they die they fall out part of the way and dont move for days.

Glad he is out and about!
nichjake
His shell was open a little bit...he didn't even pull in when I buped him with the gravel vac...great now I've got two snails...I don't want babys! Can mystery snails breed with malaysian trumpet snails (at least thats what I think it is)?
Chishower
Nope, your safe.

Unless MTS can breed on their own. blink.gif Not sure about them.

Oh my gosh I hope not... ohmy.gif That would be awful rofl3.gif

I'm very glad its alive though...I'm glad I kept forgeting to take it out. Now I've got to think of a great name for it, any suggestions?

Maybe he just comes out at night so you dont ever see him, is he always in the same spot every day?

Oh and MTS you only need 1 to have many smile.gif
nichjake
It never moves, from day to day its in exactly the same spot. It kind of worries me sometimes, I can't tell if its dead or playing possum. What do mean I only have to have 1 to have many? yikes.gif Can they reproduce on their own? unsure.gif
silver8328
Yup smile.gif

Malaysian Trumpet Snail
nichjake
Oh noooo crap.gif . I hope mine decides not to...I've had it a couple weeks and no babys yet. I hope it stays that way. If it does reproduce will my fish eat the eggs? I've three goldies and two dojos.
silver8328
They give birth to live snails but I dont know if the fish would eat them. It says that they have harder shells then most snails but I would think if the babies were small enough the fish could eat them
nichjake
As much as I hate the thought of them getting eaten I hope they do...I really don't want a million little snail in my tank ohmy.gif .If I do then so be it...I'll find somehting to do with them *runs to find adoptive parents for baby snailies*

If MTS's have Birth Live babies.....they wouldnt have hundreds at a time would they? blink.gif
smack536
im not too certain that any snails have live babies. the all come from eggs, mts do. oodles at a time, at that. smile.gif
silver8328
Really? All the sites Ive seen about them say they give birth to live babies

I just checked out another site and it says there are some species of MTS that are livebearing and some that lay eggs. Weird

Trumpet Snails
nichjake
Yeah, same here. Everything I've read said they give birth to live babies. I do admit it sounds a tad bit strange but I've read it in several different places, I haven't seen anywhere where it says they lay eggs.... headscratch.gif

yea they can.. lol.. i got one, now i have 20 biggrin.gif

edit: iv read everywhere that they give birth to live snails.. and i think it might be true, coz all my babies are different sizes.. as if she gave birth to them at all different times coz im sure all those snails didnt come out on the same day!
smack536
the snail in that link is a trapdoor, not a MTS. As far as im aware, they are eggs in small clutches.....
