ive been reading the posts on here...and a lot of them say to keep betta in a covered tank as they are known to jump. the tank i was planing on keeping a betta in is not covered ohmy.gif

im planing on planting it (not quite sure what with yet, but some will be floating) and theres probably going to be some driftwood added if i can find a piece i like.

anyway i guess what im wondering is does anyone have their betta in a uncovered tank? its going to be planted and have hiding spaces and be in a non busy part of my room...so hopefully he wouldnt freak out or something.

here's a pic of the tank....not set up or anything, its just to give you an idea.

(its not a very good photo, but its just to show the size and what its like. and ive got a heater for it)

I had my betta in an uncovered tank for two days before he jumped. Luckily, he made it, but after that I keep it covered with a mousepad at all times.

Maybe just put a peice of plexi or something over it while your not home?

Or, you can go to a craft store and get a piece of plastic screen (its used for needle pointing, it has a real name, but I can't think of it right now) and lay that over the top. Its inexpensive and will allow light through.

*I tried finding a picture online, but of course, I can't find it.*

Most LFS have drip screens - clear plastic covers of varying sizes that can be cut down further with strong scissors.

I'd make the effort to cover it somehow - nothing as heartbreaking as finding your fish dry and crispy beside the tank sad.gif

i think what you are talking about is called plastic canvas, it is cheap and you can get it in different sizes.

i had a betta once in a uncovered fish bowl, didn't know they could jump out at that time. luckly he never did, but i surely wouldn't try it now that i know.

my betta was in an uncovered container for 5 months with no problems. i think a lot of it depends on the betta. ive heard most will jump though, so id cover it "just in case"!

yes! Kristysweets, that is exactly what I was trying to describe! LOL, glad someone can understand my madness!

Nah just go into dad's office and rip a clear file cover off one of his files. You can cut it with scissors to go around the lamp base and he'll probably never notice.

hehe thanks for all the ideas of things to use as covers smile.gif

It Does depend on the betta, but you'd be lucky to find one that doesn't jump, and to be honest, who wants to test their luck! biggrin.gif They're very well known as jumpers..
