Hi everyone! I plan on building a pond for my comets, but I want to do all the research first.

I will need a filter capable of handling a pond that is about 1500-2000 gallons (round). I would like the filter to be connected to a waterfall, flowing to a stream, and then to the main pond.

I have read up on the Skippy Filter, but Im not entirely sure I understand how it works. Like where does the water come in at and where does it flow out of? I am a DIY dunce. I know hubby could do it, but I want to understand how these things work so I can explain it to him.

It says that the 70 gallon skippy filter is good for ponds up to 3000 gallons! Does this sound right to you? Others have said no, that I will need at least a 100 gallon filter.

Any of you made your own pond filters before? If so how did you do it and was it capable of keeping your pond crystal clear?

Thanks so much for any advice you can give. I know my comets will appreciate it!

Edit: Sorry the 70 gallon says it will handle up to 2000 gallon size...I guess I didnt read it correctly! Maybe I need the 100 gallon Skippy filter??? OMG how to hide 100 gallons!!!

Hiding a 100 gallon filter is actually pretty easy. You bury it. If your filter and beginning to the stream is uphill from the pnd, you would bury the filter under and behind where the stream starts. Anyway, on to the filter and how it works:

The water is fed into the PVC tube that juts above the sponges in the tub. It goes down into the tub and swirls as it rises up the tub. then it flow freely through the hole cut and formed in the side of the tub. That where it would flow to the waterfall and down the stream to the pond.

If you buried the tub up to the level of the PVC coming out hte side, you would only have about a ten inch profile to hide. Heck, you could even place a couple of plastic flats on the surface of the foam to house some semi-aquatic plants....

I can't wait to see some pictures! biggrin.gif

Lol I just realized what a stupid idea a stream is. Ok, living in WV, I have my filter that feeds a waterfall....which feeds a stream...which goes to the main pond... nuh-uh! Bad idea. Streams are shallower...I can just see it freezing in the winter...then the pump will pump my pond dry!!! Ok...no stream..Ill stick with the waterfall and the pond by itself...easier and probably prettier anyway.

Oh and thanks so much for the advice about hiding the filter!!!! I still need to figure out what the heck Im doing..Im so afraid Im in over my head here. I think I will watch the pond section of the board for tips.

Its all much easier than it looks to be at first. Trust me. Its no different than setting up a fishtank, only on a much larer scale. Stick with the basics and you cant go wrong..... wink.gif
