I have a neighbor that is selling a 125g tank. It has 2 whisper filters on it. It is currently a cichlid tank. It is 10 years old. She wants $200 dollars for it. WHat other equitment will I need to make it a salt tank? Is the tank to old?

Hi,

I'm really new to all this marine stuff as well, but from reading a few books, you only really need to add sea salt for a basic fish only system. The other cichlid equipment should be useable (heater/filter).

It gets quite a bit more complicated if you want to keep corals or invertibrates.

I agree. Some people will tell you that nothing will work and you need all new stuff. Is the substrate crushed coral of some sort? I assume if they are Africans then it probably is. That may be the only thing you may want to replace or add more of, simply because over the years a lot of it has probably broken down and dissolved. You will need to add fresh coral gravel/sand to get the nice buffering benefits.

As for the price that sounds like a great deal as a 125 gallon (tank only) is about $300 new. smile.gif

The only thing I might to the tank itself (minus the accessories) in maybe scrape all the old sealant of and put some new stuff on (you can get it almost anywhere that sells tanks). But thats only if it looks in any way questionable.
Sounds like a great deal though, man a 125 gallon tank, that would be awesome!
