Hi..I have plastic plants in my tank (I am still a beginner..live plants seem a little overwhelming..)

I have only had my goldies for six months - I am getting a lot of brown algae - on my plants and on my tank - is there something I am doing wrong? I keep the light on from about 2-9 or so - is that too long? The tank is not in direct light - just in my living room..my water has been testing ok - so I am not sure if this brown algae is just part of having fishies or what.. everyone on the board keeps saying how great the green stuff is..right?

Any help would be appreciated -

Hi and welcome biggrin.gif

Brown algae is common in a newly set up aquarium. It is caused by too little light, an excess of silicates and too little oxygen.Once your tank has settled, green algae will be growing and you may not see much brown algae growth. It really is easy to clean not unlike green algae.Just wipe the glass with a sponge before a water change. You can wash the plants too biggrin.gif Hope that helped a bit!

Thanks! Too little light and oxygen, huh? WOW. I thought I had too much light on..question - how do I get more oxygen in the tank? I am now the process of upgrading and I have a 46 gallon tank - two Penguin filters and I will have an air stone..is that going to be enough oxygen?

How many fish do you have?I think it will all depend on how many fish there are and the temperature of the tank. The higher the temp is,the less the oxygen....I'm sure someone with more knowledge will come along and help you more biggrin.gif
