Hi everyone....does anyone feed their fish peas or other veggies such as squash, cucumber and zuccini to their fish as a treat? or should they just be used for ailing fish with digestive and bouyancy problems. My fish have always been on flake food only and I have never had any ailments (that I know of- except for the occasional case of the stares when I am in the room, but then I look at him and he pretends he is doing something else). However, I wonder if they are missing out on something in their diet....the are eating Nutrafin Max. Thanks Brad.

Feeding just flakes food is fine. I feed my black moor soaked flake food and the odd time I feed some tubifex worms and that's it.

Some people feed peas for constipation. Other people feed them as a treat as well as other veggies.

Peas are commonly used to treat swimbladder.
But why treat swimbladder when you can prevent it?

'prevention is better than cure'

therefore, its best to include peas in the fish diet

Peas act as a laxative by helping clear the fish digestive system.
Especially important for fancy goldfish who are more prone to swimbladder.

Feed minimum once a week (I feed every second day).
get some frozen peas --> thaw them --> take off the skin --> cut it up
--> throw it in the tank exactly.gif

Wow...I peeled some peas and put them in for Max and Taz....haven't seen anything go for food like that since the local university football team went out to the all you can eat buffet at Pizza Delight!!!!

It's "ok" to feed just flake/pellets, but there are important reasons that indicate a varied diet is preferable:

1. In the wild, fish eats a variety of food, not just "worms" or "veggies" all the time.
2. As Pandemonium said, prevention is better than cure. Just like us, a varied diet is much much healthier.
3. Flake or pellets, however expensive or "complete" as the package says, is only a staple, and will not all provide all the needed nutrition.

My fishies' diet includes 2 kinds of pellets, algae wafer, peas, zucchini and bloodworms.

So, if I eat meat, veggies and all sort of wonderful things, why not my fishies biggrin.gif ?

cheers

yeah my fish go nuts over them too !! exactly.gif

frozen bloodworms serve the same purpose as peas (they too act as laxative)
However, I don't think they are as healthy and make goldfish FAT

here's a tip:

when buying fish flakes, fish pellets etc...
look at the ingredients for SPIRULINA
they also act to help prevent swimbladder

My fish get: peas, cucumbers, green beans, peaches, greens, bloodworms, tubifex worms, krill, algea wafers, shrimp pellets, and sometimes wardly pellets. A varried diet keeps them pretty happy.

I feed my fishie home made gel food, soaked flakes, and all sorts of veggies smile.gif I alternate...

I do gel, flakes, peas, fast. and on any given day he has his veggie clip with treats on it smile.gif

His diet is as good as mine lol

I also feed peas on a "regular" basis. My goldies go crazy for them. Now if only I could convince my kids . . . .

Whooops...I think they liked the peas too much...I gave them some regular food and they didn't seemed too impressed...a little Pead Off if you ask me! wink.gif
