Fluvals for their many many compartments..... Eheim for their motor reliability. I've had an Eheim canister running for 20years and it's still going... amazingly, the design of the motor and the parts haven't changed in all that time. Show you how advance they were and still are.

Awww, but the Koko likes the Fluval, because of the many compartments and the fact they are easy to clean once you get use to it. They dont cost a whole lot and they are quite....I havent had any other canister but I have two fluvals and I love them

I have never seen or heard a magnum, but I have a fluval and they are great! They are nice and quiet, but if you want to, you can make them pump air into the water aswell for aeration, which is alittle noiser, but not as noisey as many air pumps!

I jighly recomend Fluval!

I personally like the fluval because you have the biological balls in the bottom chamber and then you can chose what other chips you want in the other chambers. Its got more control. I have the balls in the bottom then the Ammo-Chips in the next one and the sponges in the very top chamber.......

Re: Bio-Filtration

Frankly if bio-filtration is your main objective, it's more what media you put in rather than what canister filter. All the canister filter does is circulate the water thru the media of your choice (or media recommended by the manufacturer.). U can change the media in the bio-filter to whatever suits you.... but the more surface area the material has, the better it is at bacterial colonisation. U could put gravel as filter media in the canister if you wish, but gravel doesn't pack a whole lot of surface area to volume ratio compared to other bio-media.

U can check out 'bio-home' filtration material, sintered glass, ceramic rings, lava rock or even coral chips and put all these things in your canister.... the choice is yours.

The difference in canister filter is the ease or difficulty of maintenance. I have to admit that the Fluval is a whole lot more user friendly when it comes to maintenance. The Eheim can sometime take getting used to.... but I guess the Eheim is for brand faithfuls like myself 'cos of their reliability. I don't know if the Fluval can run 20years, 24/7 and still not breakdown? These days there are so many makes of canisters.... some really cheap ones made in China. They work the same as an Eheim or Fluval.... but U might have to change the filter every 2-3years due to breakdown. Oh, plus many of these cheaper canisters don't have parts that you can buy to replace individually..... Eg, In an Eheim, u can buy just the impeller or the ceramic shaft or the rubber seal. They expect that the electric motor will out last these things and these things are sold to replace when required. Many of the cheaper brands have everything completely sealed and built in.... so if the impeller breaks, u gotta go get a whole new canister.

I must say i like Eheim's better.(sorry, The Koko) My opinion, but i think they are better built and i know they have NO media bypass. The fluvals well they can have their problems and well...

Well to each there own, but I do have to say one thing that for people that cant afford the more expensive on I would go with the fluval, it doesnt cost as much and I have had both of mine up and running 24/7 and never had a proplem with it

Re: Bio-Filtration

I just sprang for a canister filter over this past weekend. I was standing in front of the filters for probably a good 40 mins trying to decide between the Eheim and Fluval. I bought the Eheim. Were I live in Northern Califonia the Eheim was MUCH less expensive. the Eheim was about $84.00 for my size tank, where Fluval was $143.00 for the same size. But the price was not the the only reason I went w/ Eheim. It was also that they seemed to do the exact thing, ultimately, and the Ehiem seemed to have more readily replaceable parts. I've never had a canister filter, so I can't speak on them caparitivley from use, but the Eheim seemed a much better deal to me.
