Hi

I'm on the nitrite stage of cycling my tank and was wanting to salt my tank so I went out and bought some, what i thought at the time, aquarium salt. But when i read the box properly it was called Tonic Salt and it said for water conditioning or when starting a new tank that 1 teaspoon should be used for every 18litres. unsure.gif

Is this the same as aquarium salt and is this dosage enough to help relieve my fishy from the nitrite in the water??

Any help would be welcome!!

Ta in advance!

Oops think this is in the wrong place?!

Hi welcometo.jpg

Is the salt NaCl (Sodium Chloride)? Then it should be fine. The only other thing you want to avoid with salt (besides salts that are not comprised of NaCl) is table salt with added iodine or any caking agents" these are bad for fish! Epsom salts, e.g. are not sodium - so just read the label and it will give you a clue! smile.gif

Don't know if that helped but please come back and ask more if you have more questions! Are you in England?

Hi,

Thanks for your replies and welcomes! Think I might just get some rock salt cos at least i know thats ok! There was no ingredients on the box- in fact not much info at all!

Graham, I'm in Scotland- meant to post in the UK bit! But I didn't really know what I was doing. rolleyes.gif

Hopefully, like keeping goldfish, i'll learn to be good at it in time! biggrin.gif

Also just another wee question, does it take longer to cycle with a small fish, cos my fantail is about 1inch (not inc tail) and I just wondered cos he'll be making less waste?

rock salt or sea salt is fine as long as its all natural with NO additives.
I use pure sea salt from the supermarket smile.gif

For a a tonic solution you want to add 1 TEAspoon per gallon
disolve in a cup of tank water first then add it to an area with hight curent slowely, dont dump it onthe fish smile.gif

Fot a higher ratio to treat certain illness or in QT then you repeat the above in 12 hours then another 12 hours

This will take the salinity up to 0.3%

as for advixing on tha exacat amount of salinity you need while cycling and going thru the nitrIte phase i advise posting here:

This is the section on water chemistry and there are people there that can help alot more.

hope that helps!
