I read somewhere that plants will help lower nitrates?

Is it true? will they help alot? I'll still keep my weekly water changes but if I have plants in the tank, will it help lower the nitrates to a real low level?

I dont have too much experience with live plants in a goldie tank, the only planted tank in my house is the guppy tank. As for ponds, there are quite a few plants that are called oxygenating plants. They have an enormous root system, and are supposed to take more waste out off the water than other plants. Among them are water lettuce, water hyacinth, duck weed, parrot feather, just to name a few...
HOpe that helps a bit...
I put your topic in the plant section, maybe somebody else has more ideas.... smile.gif

Plants will help with the extra waste in the tank so in a since they can help out with it, but that doesnt mean that they will make it to the point of no water change. Plants need O2 at nite and carbonDioxide during the day, so its a balance of life. If you have to many plants in the tank sometimes you will wind up killing the plants them selfs when they need the food and stuggleing for it. Normally when I add plants I only add a few per 20 gals of water. in my 36 gal tank I only have 6 plants in there and I will be needing to take some out soon cause they are fighting for food now smile.gif

Wow, thats something I didnt know! I have like 10 plants, some small, in my 20 gl tank, no CO2 source, just fertilized with Flourish excel. They do well, but I am wondering if they are not too many in there....Maybe devide some to my other guppy tank (yeah, sheesh, I got a 2. one now! biggrin.gif )

The amount of nitrogen that the plants uptake depends on how fast they grow, they need it to form new cells. If you have slow growing plants like anubias or Java ferns, you will need a lot of these to keep your nitrate levels below detection. On the other hand, if you get fast growers like hornwort or bacopa, a few of them will deplete almost all the nitrate!
