Full Version: What Is The Normal Mortality Rate Of Fry?

This Spring my two female goldfish layed three batches of eggs. I was shocked at the third batch, I thought goldfish only layed once a year but one of my fish layed twice. Anyways of about two hundred fry (at least thats how many it looked like) only one has survived, which makes me very sad.

I was just wondering, is that fairly normal, to loose so many or did I just do a really bad job? It was my first time raising fry and I didn't really know what I was doing, which probably contributed to the problem.

Anyway, I just want to know so I know what to expect next time. Also is it abnormal to a fish to lay more than one batch of eggs a year? She layed them about five months apart, on Christmas Eve and agian on Good Friday. She must have a thing for the holidays!

not really sure tbh, my pond fish were spawning every few days in the really warm weather and about 40 fry have survived ...

i understood the GF would spawn (if conditions were right) every couple of weeks... as i say mine did a fews days apart on the really warm days.. i reckon i have got 3 diferent ages of fry from this summer...

i doubt it was anyting you did, the parents will eat the eggs & fry sometimes, and if the fry just aint strong enough.... this is why Gf lay thousnads of eggs (in ponds anyway - i have not breed in tanks) so there is more chance of a couple surviving smile.gif

i have no idea if any of that was helpful... it is getting late here in UK, my eyes are shutting.... smile.gif

I am interested in how you took care of the fry...did you leave them in with the parents....did you take either them or the parents out of the tank...what was the water params that were in the tank with the fry...what and how were you feeding them...

From my experiences....half of the fish die from natural causes....then you go througha period of growth adn then about at the month stages you loose more then I think after 2 months, those still living have a great chance of growing to maturity is reached

I didn't leave them in with the parents and I am asamed to admit I didn't really know what I was doing. Looking back now I'm amazed Freddie survived. I don't know what the water params were, I didnt even think to test, this was before I joined kokos and learned about goldfish and what they need. I'll do better next time, now that I know what to do and have people that can help.
