Hmm...I wasn't really sure where to put this topic since I don't have any goldfish right now, and it deals with bettas and tetras.

Anyways, I think I brought in a few fruit flies with some backyard compost when I transplanted my peace lily, and I think they bred cuz they were all over my room! I felt bad and I opened my window, and I saw a few fly threw the screen, but they just don't have that much intelligence for all to escape. Anyways, I had a bucket of water out and I noticed that their were a bunch of dead fruit flies in there (they die instantly when they hit water) and I got thinking....maybe my betta would like one because they ARE insectivores. So I fished out a few and he gobbled them up. Then I gave the rest to my tetras and they loved them too! The tetras must have been really sick of their generic tropical flakes cuz they jumped out of the water. Its kinda funny seeing 1" fish leap out of the water like pirrahnas and splash water on the side of the tank. smile.gif Are dead fruit flies okay to feed the fishies?

Are you sure they are fruit flies, as you can get gnats that live and breed in the compost that might look a bit like them. Anyway it doesnt matter as they are small and the fish will love them.

Nope not sure if they were gnats or fruit flies...just really small black flies that fly all crazilly. The fishies do love them smile.gif

Can goldies eat them aswell?

One of my friends had a betta and some millipedes (not in the same tank, obviously). He would get fruit flies on the rotting veggies he fed the 'pedes, and he would feed them to his betta.

Good story, huh? Not sure where I was going with that one... biggrin.gif

As I was reading this a fruit fly was buzzing in front of my face no joke. We have some every once and a while because my mom raises mealworms for the birds and they eat fruit the more rotten the better. Maybe I'll set out a glass and see if I can catch any for my Betta.

cool topic...I wonder how goldfish will take to gnats and fruit flies
