A friend of mine makes ceramics. Literally pours them, fires them , the whole nine yards. She had some that would look good in a tank but I want to make sure they are safe. She called the company that makes the sealer that is fired on, & they said once sealed it is contained. That they are like the store bought ones.

Has anyone ever used this kind of decoration before?

I would think if it is glazed and sealed and would be food safe, then it should be safe for the tank too. That would be neat to make your own decor! biggrin.gif

I have used ceramic figurine/planters from the 50's. They were glazed all over except on the bottom. I've read that the unglazed parts might start to break down and disolve over time so i siliconed a pice of plexiglass cut to size onto the bottoms. They've been in there a few years and no problems.

if it is safe for the tank, you got a wonderful friend to make you things like that

That's what I thought, thanks for your responses!

(I asked her to seal every inch of them, cause I didn't want it to dissolve.)She sells them as "water fall like things"

They should be great. I will be able to run a tube inside them & have bubbles come up thru it!

It will be a couple of weeks before they're ready, but when I get 'em hooked up I'll post pics!!

They look like tree trunks with green plants AND one has cute little frogs & the other cute little sea turtles! Sooooooo cute! yeah.gif

Would be fun to have a friend like that.

Make sure she uses a non-toxic glaze. Some glazes arent compatible with an aquarium environment..... wink.gif

good luck and I cant wait to see some pics of them! biggrin.gif

I haven't forgotten! She sells her ceramics at "shows" and has been busy preparing for that. She said she'll be making mine soon! I can't wait.

I am getting two for each tank. One in each back corner! I think they'll look fantastic!!

((Beware when you see them you WILL want some too)) I told her that when I post pics she will be bombarded with orders (She had a big smile!) smile.gif

I just saw this post. Make sure to ask her if the glazes contain lead. If they do they could be poisonus to the fish.

any food safe glaze fired to the proper cone is fish safe. Food safe glazes dont contain any harmful chemicals or whatnot. smile.gif I have made many things this way, used them extensively, and never had a problem. smile.gif

watch out for raku glazes, they look great but they are not food safe and contain a lot of copper and other metals.
