Hey everybody! Uhm, I've been watching my guppies for awhile now and noticed something odd... I currently have 4 female feeder guppies (There were 6 but 2 died *sniff*) in a 10 gallon tank. I know 2 of them are mature enough for breeding and the other 2 are very close, if not there already. They share the tank with my only male fancy guppy who has not made one single move on any of the females blink.gif

The male used to be kept in a 5 gallon tank all by himself (almost 2 months I think) before I got my ADFs and moved him to the 10 gallon with the feeder guppies. I wouldn't think that being alone all that time would have caused him to show no interest in the females, would it?

I just think it's very strange. I'm not trying to get them to breed or anything, but I was expecting it when I put them together. Has anybody else ever noticed this happening before? LoL

Just curious since my last male guppy I had was such a filthy little thing LoL

Homosexuality does occur in nature, but I don't think it would be caused by just being alone for a while. It's possible that he's just not interested in reproducing... I know some perfectly straight people like this. It's not really common, obviously, or we'd all be dead, but I think that it's a relatively "normal" state of sexuality, statistically speaking.

It's also possible, I suppose, that somehow the conditions are not right for him to breed. Maybe he's picky, and wants silk sheets and incense. Or water that's exactly 79.3 degrees. biggrin.gif

LoL Thanks everybody. Hmm, I just thought it was really really strange for a guppy. I've never heard of a male not interested in breeding when females are around o.0 LoL

He likes the company of the females. He's always hanging around them and they hang around him. They didn't quite form a school or anything, they just lean on each other in the same spots while resting or investigate something together. It's funny to watch smile.gif

"Homosexuality does occur in nature"

That's for sure -_- My dog seems to prefer the company of other male dogs as well thanks to some delivery guy that let their male dog loose up here while dropping off a large package and it messed around with ours when he was a puppy sad.gif Probably doesn't know any better now -_- *sigh* Oh well.. Not that we prefered the other way anyways either LoL.

Thanks again smile.gif *pokes board* It hasn't been sending me emails when there's a new post -_- Wonder what's going on with my email now. I never recieved my invoice for my website payment through email either -_- *sigh*

That's hillarious! You could also be old fashioned and pour some vodka in the water as that works for most people! rofl3.gif rofl3.gif

I have a gay dog too and I don't love him any less! He likes black boy dogs. Mainly labs. Does anyone have a gay black lab in need of a date? Oh wait, maybe there's another forum online for this kind of dating service. heartpump.gif

he may not recognize them as his own kind.... I had a ballon mollie who thought she was a female betta, because she lived with my girls.. Wouldnt eat tropic food, only betta, and would let the male I got for her anywhere near her, she didnt flare, but would attack him in a betta fashion

LoL magic!! That's so funny! What could my guppy be thinking he is though? He was kept with no other creatures and the 10 gallon tank that the 5 gallon sits by did have 2 female guppies in it at the time (*sniff* they both died though).

*sigh* one of my little tiny guppies won't live much longer I don't think. I caught it earlier today with it's head caught in the filter somehow. I don't know how it got pass the brand new piece of cheesecloth I put on the intake tube but it did. Poor thing is having a hard time swimming sad.gif

LoL Sorry, my guy is a 2 1/2 yr old grey wolf, but hey, dogs don't seem to mind they are different breeds though LoL tongue.gif

[edit] LoL I knew I'd make a typo and catch it afterwards -_-

I was feeding my fishies last night and noticed my little tiny female guppy was chasing around my male guppy... She's nipping at his fin sad.gif Could this kind of turn him off from the whole breeding thing? LoL

Poor guy.. He's being picked on by a female that is barely 1/3 his size o.0 As soon as I noticed it last night, I rinsed out my breeder trap and placed the male in there for right now. I have no other way to seperate them for now. I can't put one in with my ADFs. They snapped at my male a few times so I had to move him out of there when I got the frogs LoL My spare 10 gallon isn't setup yet, and it wouldn't have a filter even if it were... just an old light from my grandma I still need to clean up LoL

Just thought I'd ask about the tail nipping. I'm sure it would prevent me from wanting to be around the other fishies if that were me in his place!

he may be intimadated by the girls, sounds like a good answer!

Poor fishy sad.gif He's still in the breeding trap right now. His tail looks pretty nasty now *sigh* What was that medication to help fix that? I don't think I can get any, especially anytime soon if it's affordable, but it wouldn't hurt to price it.

I can't get my spare 10 gallon going for a little bit still either. I need to get some sort of cover for it to keep dust out and the fish in LoL. My light isn't a full hood, just a little old light casing. It's a tad to big for my 10 gallon, but it'll work okay smile.gif

melefix or bettafix will help that.... if you can find bettamax, it works superb on any long finned fish (used it on my goldies once, awsome stuff)

Okay, thanks smile.gif I don't know when I can get uptown or even if I can get any since I will need to hopefully by a cover of some sort of my other tank and a filter of some sort as well. *sigh*

My little guy is still seperated. I can see he's a little miserable in there, but the other guppies have finally started ignoring him in there a bit. I'm sure if he were back in the main tank the little female would start nipping his tail again though -_-

I didn't want to start a new topic, but my male guppy is dying *sniff* sad.gif

I'm hoping somebody has some idea of what's going on. Two of my female guppies have died within the last 2-3 weeks and both looked similar to my male when they died.

First off, the water params are fine... Ammonia and Nitrite are both at 0 (Nitrite is actually .05 but it has never gone lower than that, no matter how many water changes I do -_-). Nitrate stays close to 20 and the ph is 7.

I'm worrying about the fish mostly because with both females and now the male, I notice them starting to lay around on their sides on the bottom of the tank (my male guppy is still in the breeder trap because of his tail though). Rather than just laying down flat like you normally see them do, between the stomach and the tail is arched so it's not touching the 'ground'. It's just their head and tail and a little of the stomach that are actually touching anything. My previous guppies I've had that have died were never in a position like this before. This is all recent.

My other 2 females look okay still and are swimming fine. I'll check in on them and make sure they are eating okay tonight as well. The male, for the past week, has not been eating much that I've seen. He grabs a flake but spits 99.9% of them back out. He's eating something because he's not scrawny, but I don't know what's going on sad.gif I noticed the lack of eating start about a week ago, but it could have been going on longer sad.gif

Any ideas? The only medication I have, aside for salt, is something for Ich. I have no way of getting uptown and no money to pay for any other medication. The male is to far gone, but I'd like to try and save the 2 females if whatever it is attacks them as well sad.gif

*sigh* My male died sometime last night and I know it was from some sort of sickness now.

I noticed a red outline in the shape of a circle on his side near his stomach. Inside the red outline was just his normal white stomach color but the scales were all pushed out in that area.

I figured it was some sort of parasite but I do not know how to ID it sad.gif Can I rid the tank of it at all by using a salt treatment? I also have that ich medication but I wouldn't think that'd help at all. I didn't know if there were certain ingredients that could help a little at least. I cannot get uptown for medication sad.gif I already brought up the medication for the male guppy's torn fin the other day to my mom and she started nagging about how we can't afford extra things right now, so aside for the salt and ich medication, I have nothing else I can use sad.gif

I still have my 2 other little females in the tank and as far as I've seen, they've shown no signs as of yet. I bet I have to completely restart my tank cycle again though since I cannot get medication to get rid of the sickness sad.gif That brings me to another question really quick....

What is the point of having a QT tank if I can't keep my cycle going in my main tank with fish? -_- I cannot do a fishless cycle. I cannot get the pure ammonia and I have tried using fish food already but it clouded the water so bad and after a full week of doing a 90% water change, it was still so badly clouded I had to start the entire thing over -_-

Also, any ideas why every single guppy I have ever bought doesn't seem to live? I have had only 2 males so far and both have done great! My females seem to cause most of the problems. The first 2 died after giving birth (not one fry survived either -_-), one was sick and killed my male and other female and forced me to restart the tank cycle to get rid of the sickness, and now one female died died within 2 weeks that I got it, another died after being stuck in the intake tube somehow (it was covered with cheese cloth o.0) and 2 more females died completely out of the blue, apparently from whatever just killed my male -_- *sigh* Not one of my females ever lived more than 2 months sad.gif

I did a 25 - 30% water change earlier and added 2 tablespoons of aquarium salt. Does anybody have any idea what caused my male guppy to die and the other 2 females to die over the last 2-3 weeks? sad.gif
